גם: סנהדרין דף ס״ח ע״א, פרק ז׳ ארבע מיתות

    English translation - Sanhedrin 68a

Translation: William Davidson Edition - English. Read alongside the Aramaic below; numbers match the passages of the daf.

1The Gemara asks: And did Rabbi Akiva learn these halakhot from Rabbi Yehoshua? But isn’t it taught in a baraita : When Rabbi Eliezer took ill, Rabbi Akiva and his colleagues came to visit him. He was sitting on his canopied bed [ bekinof ], and they were sitting in his parlor [ biteraklin ]; they did not know if he would be able to receive them, due to his illness.

2And that day was Shabbat eve, and Rabbi Eliezer’s son Hyrcanus entered to remove his phylacteries, as phylacteries are not worn on Shabbat. His father berated him, and he left reprimanded. Hyrcanus said to his father’s colleagues: It appears to me that father went insane, since he berated me for no reason. Rabbi Eliezer heard this and said to them: He, Hyrcanus, and his mother went insane. How can they neglect Shabbat preparations with regard to prohibitions punishable by stoning, such as lighting the candles and preparing hot food, and engage in preparations concerning prohibitions by rabbinic decree, such as wearing phylacteries on Shabbat?

3Since the Sages perceived from this retort that his mind was stable, they entered and sat before him at a distance of four cubits, as he was ostracized (see Bava Metzia 59b). It is forbidden to sit within four cubits of an ostracized person.

4Rabbi Eliezer said to them: Why have you come? They said to him: We have come to study Torah, as they did not want to say that they came to visit him due to his illness. Rabbi Eliezer said to them: And why have you not come until now? They said to him: We did not have spare time. Rabbi Eliezer said to them: I would be surprised if these Sages die their own death, i.e., a natural death. Rather, they will be tortured to death by the Romans. Rabbi Akiva said to him: How will my death come about? Rabbi Eliezer said to him: Your death will be worse than theirs, as you were my primary student and you did not come to study.

5Rabbi Eliezer raised his two arms and placed them on his heart, and he said: Woe to you, my two arms, as they are like two Torah scrolls that are now being rolled up, and will never be opened again. I have learned much Torah, and I have taught much Torah. I have learned much Torah, and I have not taken away from my teachers, i.e., I have not received from their wisdom, even like a dog lapping from the sea. I have taught much Torah, and my students have taken away from me, i.e., they have received from my wisdom, only like the tiny amount that a paintbrush removes from a tube of paint.

6Moreover, I can teach three hundred halakhot with regard to a snow-white leprous mark [ bebaheret ], but no person has ever asked me anything about them. He could not find a student who could fully understand him in those matters. Moreover, I can teach three hundred halakhot , and some say that Rabbi Eliezer said three thousand halakhot , with regard to the planting of cucumbers by sorcery, but no person has ever asked me anything about them, besides Akiva ben Yosef.

7Rabbi Eliezer described the incident: Once he and I were walking along the way, and he said to me: My teacher, teach me about the planting of cucumbers. I said one statement of sorcery, and the entire field became filled with cucumbers. He said to me: My teacher, you have taught me about planting them; teach me about uprooting them. I said one statement and they all were gathered to one place.

8After these comments, the Sages asked him questions of halakha : What is the halakha , with regard to ritual impurity, of a ball made of leather and stuffed with rags, and likewise a last, the frame on which a shoe is fashioned, which is made of leather and stuffed with rags, and likewise an amulet wrapped in leather, and a pouch for pearls, wrapped in leather, and a small weight, which is wrapped in leather? Rabbi Eliezer said to them: They are susceptible to impurity, and their purification is effected by immersing them in a ritual bath as they are, as there is no need to open them up.

9They asked him further: What is the halakha with regard to a shoe that is on a last? Is it considered a complete vessel, which needs no further preparation, and is therefore susceptible to impurity? Rabbi Eliezer said to them: It is pure, and with this word, his soul left him in purity. Rabbi Yehoshua stood on his feet and said: The vow is permitted; the vow is permitted; i.e., the ostracism that was placed on Rabbi Eliezer is removed.

10Rabbi Akiva was not present at the time of his death. At the conclusion of Shabbat, Rabbi Akiva encountered the funeral procession on his way from Caesarea to Lod. Rabbi Akiva was striking his flesh in terrible anguish and regret until his blood flowed to the earth. He began to eulogize Rabbi Eliezer in the row of those comforting the mourners, and said: “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen” (II Kings 2:12). I have many coins, but I do not have a money changer to whom to give them, i.e., I have many questions, but after your death I have no one who can answer them.

11The Gemara returns to the matter at hand: Apparently, Rabbi Akiva learned the halakhot of gathering cucumbers through sorcery from Rabbi Eliezer, not from Rabbi Yehoshua. The Gemara answers: He learned it from Rabbi Eliezer but he did not understand it. Later he learned it from Rabbi Yehoshua, and Rabbi Yehoshua explained it to him.

12The Gemara asks: How could Rabbi Eliezer have performed that act of sorcery? But didn’t we learn in the mishna that one who performs an act of sorcery is liable? The Gemara answers: Performing sorcery not in order to use it, but in order to teach oneself the halakhot is different, and it is permitted; as the Master says that it is derived from the verse: “You shall not learn to do like the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you…one who uses divination, a soothsayer, an enchanter, or a sorcerer” (Deuteronomy 18:9–10), so that you shall not learn, i.e., it is prohibited for you to learn, in order to do, but you may learn, i.e., it is permitted for you to learn, in order to understand the matter yourself and teach it to others.

    Rashi

But behold - The matter of the gathering of cucumbers.

Rabbi Akiva learned it from Rabbi Yehoshua - By way of a question.

Kinuf - Four posts and a canopy draped over them, as we say in Sukkah (10a).

To remove the tefillin of his father - As he held that Shabbat is not a time for tefillin. So it is [hence] forbidden to wear them, lest he go out with them to the public domain.

That father went insane - And he is close to death. As if his mind was composed, he would have removed his tefillin.

A prohibition [punishable by] stoning - the lighting of a lamp and the insulation of hot water - whereas they are dealing with a matter that is only a rabbinic Shabbat prohibition. For there is no prohibition of work ( melakha ) in placing tefillin [on oneself] on Shabbat, and even if he went out with them into the public domain. As it is in the way of clothing, and it is an ornament for him on weekdays.

At a distance of four cubits - Because of the excommunication; for they excommunicated him during the disagreement about Akhnai's oven in Bava Metzia (59b).

What is his - With what will be his death?

Yours will be worse than theirs - Because your heart is as wide as a hall; so if you had served me, you would have learned much Torah.

He raised - Rabbi Eliezer [raised] his two forearms.

That are being rolled up - Just like when a Torah scroll is being rolled up and the writing is concealed, so too is the Torah in my heart being hidden and concealed as I die. For they did not serve me and learn from me.

And I have not taken away from my teachers, even like a dog lapping from the sea: According to their wisdom, which was great, my learning only counts as having taken away and received a little wisdom from them, like a dog who laps from the sea. And likewise have my students not even taken away and received from my wisdom, to take away from the surplus of my wisdom over theirs, that which a paintbrush removes from a tube in one dip.

And I have not taken away - Meaning to say, I have not removed from their wisdom - such that they were greater than me at the beginning; and they are greater than me also now. For I only learned a little of their wisdom from them.

A tube ( shifoferet ) - A tube into which one inserts blue dye. It is a cylinder of wood or of silver into which we stick a brush and dip into the blue dye and extract it.

With regard to a snow-white leprous mark - With regard to the laws of the sightings of blemishes ( negaim ).

With regard to the planting of cucumbers - The laws of types of sorcery, through which a whole field is made full of cucumbers.

They said to him, "A ball and a last, etc." - A ball is a pelote covered with leather and tightly stuffed with ram's wool inside it. And likewise their leather last was like a type of shoe filled with hair inside it, with its opening sewn [shut]. And they would make shoes on it, the way our cobblers do with a wooden mold.

An amulet - It is of leather, filled inside and one carries it on the neck for beauty.

A small weight - Like an ounce-weight that we make from lead and cover with leather, so that it not lessen (from wear). But it is not customary to cover a large weight with leather.

And a string of a pearl - We sew the pearl with leather and hang it on the neck of an animal for medication.

What is it (its law) - For Rabbi Eliezer and the Sages disagreed about these in the Order of Tahorot (Kelim 23). And the Sages say [that] they cannot contract impurity, since a leather vessel cannot contract impurity unless it has a receptacle. For behold it is compared to sack. And these [items] - since their receptacle is made to fill permanently with a filling inside it - [are] not called a receptacle. But Rabbi Eliezer says [that] it does contract impurity, as a receptacle made to be filled is [still] called a receptacle. And they also disagreed about a ball and a last that tear and their hollow is visible: For the Rabbis conceded that they can contract impurity, as behold there is [now] a receptacle. But they argued about the matter of immersion. As the Sages say [that] what is inside separates [it from the purifying water], but Rabbi Eliezer says [that] what is inside does not separate, as it is all one vessel. And at the time of his death, they wanted to know if he reversed himself. So they asked him, "What do you say about those two disagreements?" He said to them [that] they are impure even intact and the impurity touches [them] from the outside.

And their purification is as they are - That is to say if they tear - such that the Sages concede that they can contract impurity, but argue with me, saying that the filling separates - I stand by my words that the filling does not separate, so that we immerse them as they are.

What is [the law with a] shoe that is on a last - As they also argued about this in the Tosefta of Tahorot: The Sages say [that] since it is not lacking work that requires a craftsman - since an ordinary person can remove it from the last - it is already called a vessel. But Rabbi Eliezer renders it pure, since its work has not yet been finished [so it is not yet a vessel].

The vow is permitted - Since they had excommunicated him.

Between Caesarea and Lod - As they were carrying his bier from Caesarea to Lod.

He began in the row - As they were making a row around the bier to eulogize [him].

I have many coins to exchange.

But I do not have a money changer to sort them - Meaning to say, I have many questions to ask, but there is no one to ask.

R' Eliezer did the sorcery so R' Akiva could study their performance to prosecute sorcerers.

    Tosafot

To remove the tefillin - [Rashi] explained, [those] of Rabbi Eliezer. Even though Rabbi Eliezer did not move from one place, it is called a rabbinic Shabbat prohibition. As anything with which the Sages prohibited one to go out to the public domain, it is [also] forbidden to go out with it to the courtyard. And the law is the same even if he sits in one place - it is forbidden.

How can they neglect a prohibition [punishable by] stoning - It is implied that we first light, and then we remove [the tefillin]. But that is difficult - since in the chapter [entitled] BeMeh Madlikin (Shabbat 35b ff.), it implies the opposite. For we learned (in a baraita), "The third [shofar blow] is to light the [Shabbat] light - [these are] the words of Rabbi Natan. Rabbi Yehudah says, 'The third is to remove tefillin.'" And [Rashi] explains there, "So he lights with the fourth one." And it cannot be said that he lights with the second one - as it says there, after this, "The second is to light. In accordance with whom? It is neither in accordance with Rabbi Natan nor in accordance with Rabbi Yehudah HaNassi!" Nor can it be said that he lights with the third, and this is what it is saying - the third is also to remove tefillin, but one must always first light. For it said over there, "the third is to light," and it establishes [that position] to be in accordance with Rabbi Natan, and not in accordance with Rabbi Yehudah HaNassi. And there is another difficulty - did Hyrcanus not know his [father's] custom? So it can be said (answered) that the tefillin is certainly first. However, at that time, they delayed lighting because they were preoccupied with his sickness. And that is why he rebuked him.

And their purification is as they are - [Rashi] explained that they argued concerning immersion when they tore - if what is inside it separates [the water and the object] or not. And we do not find this disagreement explicitly. Rather in Chapter 23 of Kelim, it is learned, "A ball, a shoe last, an amulet and tefillin which were torn [after becoming impure] - one who touches them is impure; but one who touches what is inside it is pure." Hence its inside is not considered a connection. But we learned in the Tosefta, "Rabbi Yehoshua ben Karcha says in the name of Rabbi Eliezer, 'We can even immerse them as they are.'" Hence since it does not separate during immersion, we understand from this that it is a connection.

He was striking his flesh - And it is not [forbidden] on account of, "Gashes for the dead" (Leviticus 19:28). As he did it for [the sake of the honor of the] Torah - as he said, "I have many coins, but I do not have a money changer to sort them."
