Job Chapter 19

עשר פעמים — עשר פרשיות יש עד כאן:

תהכרו לי — תתנכרו לי:

אתי תלין — אני הוא הלוקח מכות על משוגתי:

אם אמנם — אתם נוספים עלי לצרתי ותוכיחו עלי חרפתי מראים ומוכיחים חרפתי על פני:

אצעק — על חמס ולא אענה:

ויסע — לשון עקירה:

ויסולו — לשון מסילה:

אך זרו — ל' אכזר:

לבני בטני — לאותם שגדלתי בביתי כאלו הם בני:

עוילים מאסו בי — נבזה אני בעיני נערים וכ"ש בעיני שרים:

דבקה עצמי — שאני כחוש מעובי בשרי:

בעור שיני — כל בשרי היה לקוי בשחין ובתולעים חוץ מחניכי שיניו:

בעט ברזל — יחצבון בצור ואח"כ מעבירין את העופרת עליהם לתת לאותיות מראה שחרורית להכירם וכן דרך חוקק אבן ולא יתכן לפרש עט של עופרת שהרי רך הוא אצל האבן:

ואני ידעתי גואלי חי — וא"ו זה חוזר למעלה אתם תרדפוני ואני ידעתי גואלי חי ליפרע והוא יתקיים ויעמוד:

ואחרון על עפר יקום — לאחר שיכלו כל שוכני עפר הוא אחרון יעמוד:

יקום — יתקיים:

ואחר עורי נקפו זאת — והם אינם נותנים לב לגואלי אלא אחר מכת עורי נקפו ונקרו הקניטה והרדיפה הזאת שאמרתי שהיא לי כנוקף וחותך בעורי כמו (ישעיהו י׳:ל״ד) ונקף סבכי היער:

ומבשרי — אני רואה משפטים:

אלוה — ל' משפט ויסורין:

כי תאמרו מה נרדף לו — כמו (דברים ז׳:י״ז) כי תאמר בלבבך שהוא משמש לשון דילמא כלומר ושתהיו נותנים לבכם לחמול ולומר למה נרדפנו:

ושרש דבר — הנמצא בו מה היא לעולם לא תעלה בלבבכם הטובה הזאת שרש דבר על מה הוא עומד:

כי חמה — שאתם מגדילים עון המביא לידי חרב:

למען תדעון — ותבינו סוד הפורענות הבא על הרשעים ויש אם למסורת שדין כתיב כמו שיש דין בעולם כמו (שופטים ה׳:ז׳) שקמתי דבורה כן ראיתי בתנחומא:

The Eleventh Oration — Job’s Reply To Bildad’s Second Speech

Job does not now reply to Bildad's hypothesis, preferring to wait until all three of his companions have completed their speeches in the second round. At this juncture he just complains bitterly at the pain their biting words are causing him; such scorn and insult (Psalms 119:22), Even had he said something improper, a person should not be held responsible for what he says when distressed. He concludes that they have turned against him; that they have become his enemies and, as such, have just come to heap still more anguish on his distress (Lamentations 1:12), hounding him mercilessly. He leaves it to future generations to judge his case; they will surely exonerate him. He also arraigns his companions before Heaven for having persecuted a disease stricken man like him, one who is anguished to the point of death. (Psalms 109:16) He tells of his distress and his troubles and warns them that they should fear God's retribution for the way they had deceived him, under the guise of love.

Job is grievously hurt by his companions’ insinuation that under the cloak of his righteousness he is really a very wicked person, his suffering being the proof of this, there being no suffering without sin according to them. Even if he was as wicked as they say, and even if, as they contend, his suffering is from God, its magnitude is out of all proportion to any sin he may have committed.

Job calls upon his companions to show him the pity that God has not shown. They gain nothing from the withering of his flesh

Job asks that his story not be forgotten — He will yet be vindicated before the end of time

Job maintains that the soul cannot live outside the body — Hence, since his body is beyond repair, what hope is there left to him? The assertion, made by his companions, that despite his physical decay he still has a soul within him, through which he can yet seek salvation, is a deceit; and let them beware, for the punishment for deceit is the sword.
