    Exodus 40 — English translation

    1. 1And G OD spoke to Moses, saying:
    2. 2On the first day of the first month you shall set up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.
    3. 3Place there the Ark of the Pact, and screen off the ark with the curtain.
    4. 4Bring in the table and lay out its due setting; bring in the lampstand and light its lamps;
    5. 5and place the gold altar of incense before the Ark of the Pact. Then put up the screen for the entrance of the Tabernacle.
    6. 6You shall place the altar of burnt offering before the entrance of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting.
    7. 7Place the laver between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it.
    8. 8Set up the enclosure round about, and put in place the screen for the gate of the enclosure.
    9. 9You shall take the anointing oil and anoint the Tabernacle and all that is in it to consecrate it and all its furnishings, so that it shall be holy.
    10. 10Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils to consecrate the altar, so that the altar shall be most holy.
    11. 11And anoint the laver and its stand to consecrate it.
    12. 12You shall bring Aaron and his sons forward to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting and wash them with the water.
    13. 13Put the sacral vestments on Aaron, and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may serve Me as priest.
    14. 14Then bring his sons forward, put tunics on them,
    15. 15and anoint them as you have anointed their father, that they may serve Me as priests. This their anointing shall serve them for everlasting priesthood throughout the ages.
    16. 16This Moses did; just as G OD had commanded him, so he did.
    17. 17In the first month of the second year, on the first of the month, the Tabernacle was set up.
    18. 18Moses set up the Tabernacle, placing its sockets, setting up its planks, inserting its bars, and erecting its posts.
    19. 19He spread the tent over the Tabernacle, placing the covering of the tent on top of it—just as G OD had commanded Moses.
    20. 20He took the Pact and placed it in the ark; he fixed the poles to the ark, placed the cover on top of the ark,
    21. 21and brought the ark inside the Tabernacle. Then he put up the curtain for screening, and screened off the Ark of the Pact—just as G OD had commanded Moses.
    22. 22He placed the table in the Tent of Meeting, outside the curtain, on the north side of the Tabernacle.
    23. 23Upon it he laid out the setting of bread before G OD —as G OD had commanded Moses.
    24. 24He placed the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting opposite the table, on the south side of the Tabernacle.
    25. 25And he lit the lamps before G OD —as G OD had commanded Moses.
    26. 26He placed the altar of gold in the Tent of Meeting, before the curtain.
    27. 27On it he burned aromatic incense—as G OD had commanded Moses.
    28. 28Then he put up the screen for the entrance of the Tabernacle.
    29. 29At the entrance of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting he placed the altar of burnt offering. On it he offered up the burnt offering and the grain offering—as G OD had commanded Moses.
    30. 30He placed the laver between the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and put water in it for washing.
    31. 31From it Moses and Aaron and his sons would wash their hands and feet;
    32. 32they washed when they entered the Tent of Meeting and when they approached the altar—as G OD had commanded Moses.
    33. 33And he set up the enclosure around the Tabernacle and the altar, and put up the screen for the gate of the enclosure. When Moses had finished the work,
    34. 34the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Presence of G OD filled the Tabernacle.
    35. 35Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud had settled upon it and the Presence of G OD filled the Tabernacle.
    36. 36When the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle, the Israelites would set out, on their various journeys;
    37. 37but if the cloud did not lift, they would not set out until such time as it did lift.
    38. 38For over the Tabernacle a cloud of G OD rested by day, while fire would appear in that cloud by night—in the view of all the house of Israel throughout their journeys.

    4. ד׳וְהֵבֵאתָ֙ אֶת־הַשֻּׁלְחָ֔ן וְעָרַכְתָּ֖ אֶת־עֶרְכּ֑וֹ וְהֵבֵאתָ֙ אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָ֔ה וְהַעֲלֵיתָ֖ אֶת־נֵרֹתֶֽיהָ׃

    11. י״אוּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֶת־הַכִּיֹּ֖ר וְאֶת־כַּנּ֑וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֖ אֹתֽוֹ׃
    12. י״בוְהִקְרַבְתָּ֤ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹן֙ וְאֶת־בָּנָ֔יו אֶל־פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וְרָחַצְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם בַּמָּֽיִם׃
    13. י״גוְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֙ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֖ת בִּגְדֵ֣י הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֹת֛וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹת֖וֹ וְכִהֵ֥ן לִֽי׃
    14. י״דוְאֶת־בָּנָ֖יו תַּקְרִ֑יב וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם כֻּתֳּנֹֽת׃

    20. כ׳וַיִּקַּ֞ח וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־הָעֵדֻת֙ אֶל־הָ֣אָרֹ֔ן וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַבַּדִּ֖ים עַל־הָאָרֹ֑ן וַיִּתֵּ֧ן אֶת־הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃
    21. כ״אוַיָּבֵ֣א אֶת־הָאָרֹן֮ אֶל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֒ וַיָּ֗שֶׂם אֵ֚ת פָּרֹ֣כֶת הַמָּסָ֔ךְ וַיָּ֕סֶךְ עַ֖ל אֲר֣וֹן הָעֵד֑וּת כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

    Rashi's commentary

    1. Verse 3

      וְשַׂמְתָּ֣ שָׁ֔ם אֵ֖ת אֲר֣וֹן הָעֵד֑וּת וְסַכֹּתָ֥ עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן אֶת־הַפָּרֹֽכֶת׃

      וסכת על הארן means AND THOU SHALT SCREEN THE ARK — וסכת denotes screening and it is the correct term to use, for it (the veil) formed a partition (cf. Rashi on Exodus 35:12).

    2. Verse 4

      וְהֵבֵאתָ֙ אֶת־הַשֻּׁלְחָ֔ן וְעָרַכְתָּ֖ אֶת־עֶרְכּ֑וֹ וְהֵבֵאתָ֙ אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָ֔ה וְהַעֲלֵיתָ֖ אֶת־נֵרֹתֶֽיהָ׃

      וערכת את ערכו AND SET ITS ROWS — the two piles of the show-bread.

    3. Verse 19

      וַיִּפְרֹ֤שׂ אֶת־הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן וַיָּ֜שֶׂם אֶת־מִכְסֵ֥ה הָאֹ֛הֶל עָלָ֖יו מִלְמָ֑עְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ויפרש את האהל AND HE SPREAD THE TENT The אהל is the curtains of goats’ skins.

    4. Verse 20

      וַיִּקַּ֞ח וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־הָעֵדֻת֙ אֶל־הָ֣אָרֹ֔ן וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַבַּדִּ֖ים עַל־הָאָרֹ֑ן וַיִּתֵּ֧ן אֶת־הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃

      את העדות THE TESTIMONY — the Tablets.

    5. Verse 22

      וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־הַשֻּׁלְחָן֙ בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד עַ֛ל יֶ֥רֶךְ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן צָפֹ֑נָה מִח֖וּץ לַפָּרֹֽכֶת׃

      על ירך המשכן צפנה UPON THE SIDE OF THE DWELLING NORTHWARD — i. e. in the northern half of the width of the house (not by the northern wall) (Yoma 33b).

      ירך — This must be understood at the Targum renderd it: צדא. The real meaning is “thigh”, but the side of anything is just like the thigh which is at a person’s side.

    6. Verse 27

      וַיַּקְטֵ֥ר עָלָ֖יו קְטֹ֣רֶת סַמִּ֑ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ויקטר עליו קטרת AND HE CAUSED THE INCENSE OF AROMATICS TO ASCEND UPON IT in the morning and in the evening, as it is said, (Exodus 30:7, 8) “[And Aaron shall cause incense of aromatics to ascend thereon in fumes] every morning when he trimmeth the lamps, [and when he trimmeth the lamps at even etc.]”.

    7. Verse 29

      וְאֵת֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הָעֹלָ֔ה שָׂ֕ם פֶּ֖תַח מִשְׁכַּ֣ן אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיַּ֣עַל עָלָ֗יו אֶת־הָעֹלָה֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה…

      ויעל עליו וגו׳ AND OFFERED UPON IT etc — Not only during the first seven days of the consecration of Aaron and his sons during which Moses set the dwelling up and then dismantled it, but also on the eighth day of the consecration which was the day of the final erection of the dwelling for its ordinary purposes did Moses officiate and offer the congregational sacrifices except those which had been commanded exclusively for that very day, as it is said, (Leviticus 9:7) “[And Moses said to Aaron], approach unto the altar and offer etc.

      את העלה THE BURNT OFFERING — the daily burnt offering.

      ואח המנחה AND THE MEAL OFFERING — The meal offering brought together with the libation which was made with the daily burnt offering, at it is said, (Exodus 29:40) “[And with the one lamb] (of the daily burnt offering) shall be brought a tenth deal of flour mingled with … oil; [and the fourth part of a hin of wine for a libation …]”.

    8. Verse 31

      וְרָחֲצ֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן וּבָנָ֑יו אֶת־יְדֵיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶֽם׃

      ורחצו ממנו משה ואהרן AND MOSES AND AARON [AND HIS SONS] LAVED [THEIR HANDS] — On the eighth day of the consecration all of them mentioned here, including Moses, were alike in respect of the priestly office. The translation of ורחצו in the Targum should therefore be ומקדשין, and they were hallowing (i. e. they then hallowed their hands and their feet), for on that day Moses laved his hands together with them (Aaron and his sons).

    9. Verse 32

      בְּבֹאָ֞ם אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֗ד וּבְקׇרְבָתָ֛ם אֶל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ יִרְחָ֑צוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ובקרבתם — This is equivalent to ובקרבם, and has an imperfect sense, the same as כשיקרבו. when they were approaching.

    10. Verse 35

      וְלֹא־יָכֹ֣ל מֹשֶׁ֗ה לָבוֹא֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד כִּֽי־שָׁכַ֥ן עָלָ֖יו הֶעָנָ֑ן וּכְב֣וֹד יְהֹוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

      ולא יכל משה לבא אל אהל מועד AND MOSES WAS NOT ABLE TO COME INTO THE APPOINTED TENT — But another verse says, (Numbers 7:89) “And when Moses came into the appointed tent [to speak with Him then he heard the voice]”! There comes, however, a third verse and reconciles these apparently contradictory verses, for it says here כי שכן עליו הענן “For (or when) the cloud abode thereon (on the appointed tent)”. Hence you may say: so long as the cloud was upon it “he was not able to come into the appointed tent”, but as soon as the cloud disappeared he entered it and spoke with Him (Sifra, Braita d'Rabbi Yishmael 18).

      כִּי֩ עֲנַ֨ן יְהֹוָ֤ה עַֽל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ יוֹמָ֔ם וְאֵ֕שׁ תִּהְיֶ֥ה לַ֖יְלָה בּ֑וֹ לְעֵינֵ֥י כׇל־בֵּֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּכׇל־מַסְעֵיהֶֽם׃

      לעיני כל בית ישראל בכל מסעיהם [THE CLOUD WAS ON THE TABERNACLE] … IN THE SIGHT OF ALL THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL, THROUGHOUT ALL THEIR JOURNEYS — At every מסע which they made (according to Rashi this means: at every station at which they stopped) the cloud rested upon the Tabernacle in the place where they encamped. A place where they encamped is also called מסע (the literal meaning of which is “journey”). Similar is, (Genesis 13:3) “And he went on to his resting places (למסעיו)“ (cf. Rashi on this verse); similar also is, (Numbers 33:1) “These are the מסעי” — “the places of encampment”. Because from the place of encampment they always set out again on a new journey therefore all the different stages of their journeys (including the places where they encamped) are called מסעות.

    1. Verse 2

      בְּיוֹם־הַחֹ֥דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ תָּקִ֕ים אֶת־מִשְׁכַּ֖ן אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃

      באחד לחדש הראשון תקים, כבר פי' חז"ל שז' ימי המלואים התחילו בכ"ג באדר ובכל יום העמידו ופרקו ובשמיני העמידו ולא פרקו וכמ"ש בפרשת שמיני, ומ"ש תקים היינו שישאר קיים:

      וְשַׂמְתָּ֣ שָׁ֔ם אֵ֖ת אֲר֣וֹן הָעֵד֑וּת וְסַכֹּתָ֥ עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן אֶת־הַפָּרֹֽכֶת׃

      ושמת, מפני שבעשיה היה סדר אחר, סדר לו הסדר ששמור בהקמה:

      וַיְהִ֞י בַּחֹ֧דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֛וֹן בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הוּקַ֖ם הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

      ויהי, הוקם המשכן הוא מבנין שלא נזכר שם פועלו, שאינו מציין פעולת פועל, כי אינו מציין ההקמה שזה נעשה ע"י פעולת פועל, רק מציין שנשאר בעמידתו ולא פרקו, וזה נעשה מעצמו, וזה שרמזו חז"ל במ"ש הוקם מאליו, הגם שצרפו בזה ג"כ שהיה הקמתו ע"י סיוע ה':

    4. Verse 18

      וַיָּ֨קֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲדָנָ֔יו וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־קְרָשָׁ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֖ן אֶת־בְּרִיחָ֑יו וַיָּ֖קֶם אֶת־עַמּוּדָֽיו׃

      ויקם את המשכן, כולל המשכן עם יריעות התחתונות, ומפרש שלזה היה צריך להקדים נתינת האדמה וכו', ומבואר אצלנו שלשון שימה מורה על הסדר והערך לכן אמר רשם את קרשיו, וזה כמ"ש חז"ל שהיו רושמין על קרשי המשכן לידע איזה בן זוגו:

      וַיִּפְרֹ֤שׂ אֶת־הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן וַיָּ֜שֶׂם אֶת־מִכְסֵ֥ה הָאֹ֛הֶל עָלָ֖יו מִלְמָ֑עְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ויפרוש את האהל הם יריעות עזים, ומכמה האהל הם עורות אילים ותחשים, ומפני שה' אמר וי בקצור וסמך שמשה יבין זאת כמ"ש והקמות את המשכן כמשפטו אשר הראית בהר, לכן סיים כאשר צוה ה' את משה.

    6. Verse 20

      וַיִּקַּ֞ח וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־הָעֵדֻת֙ אֶל־הָ֣אָרֹ֔ן וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַבַּדִּ֖ים עַל־הָאָרֹ֑ן וַיִּתֵּ֧ן אֶת־הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן מִלְמָֽעְלָה׃

      ויקח, בפרשת תרומה (כ"ו ל"ג) אמר ונתתה את הפרוכת תחת הקרסים והבאת וגו' את ארון העדות ונתת את הכפרת וגו' בקדש הקדשים, ופה אמר שנתן הכפורת מבחוץ ואח"כ הביאהו אל המשכן ואח"כ שם הפרוכת, שכן למד ממ"ש למעלה (פסוק ג'), וי"ל שהסדר שבפרשת תרומה נהג בשבעת ימי המלואים והסדר שבכאן נהג בשמיר לכן סיים שעשה כאשר צוה ה' את משה :

    7. Verse 23

      וַיַּעֲרֹ֥ךְ עָלָ֛יו עֵ֥רֶךְ לֶ֖חֶם לִפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ויערך — יום שמיני למלואים היה ביום ראשון ואיך ערך את הלחם, וי"ל שכבר ערך הלחם בשבת שלפניו, או ביום ראשון של ימי המלואים כמו שמשמע ממ"ש (ל"ט ל"ו) שהביאו לחם הפנים, והדין הוא שאם סדר הלחם לאחר השבת יניחנו לשבת הבאה (מנחות ק') ואף שפרק המשכן לא נפסל הלחם כמש"ש (דף צה) שבמסודר על השלחן כ"ע לא פליגי דאין נפסל במסעות, ועיין זבחים (דף ס) תוד"ה אע"פ ודף קיז ד"ה אימא, ועל חידוש זה אמר כאשר צוה ה' את משה שכן אמר לו והבאת את השלחן וערכת את ערכו:

      וַיַּ֥עַל הַנֵּרֹ֖ת לִפְנֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ויעל הנרות, בעת העלאת הנרות כבר נתחנך אהרן לכהונה ובכ"ז העלה משה כמ"ש לו ה' והעלית את נרותיה, לכו אמר כאשר צוה ה' את משה, וכמ"ש רש"י שעבודת היום עשה משה:

    9. Verse 27

      וַיַּקְטֵ֥ר עָלָ֖יו קְטֹ֣רֶת סַמִּ֑ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {ס}

      ויקטר עליו, מבואר שמשה הקטיר וכבר באר בספרא שמיני (סימן כב) שמשה נכנס אז עם אהרן

    10. Verse 29

      וְאֵת֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הָעֹלָ֔ה שָׂ֕ם פֶּ֖תַח מִשְׁכַּ֣ן אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיַּ֣עַל עָלָ֗יו אֶת־הָעֹלָה֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה…

      ויעל עליו, עדיין לא הקים קלעי החצר ואיך העגה העוגה, רק שאין מחנכין מזבח חדש אלא בתמיד של שחר וזה היה אחר זמן התמיד והיה לו עדיין דין במה, ולא נתחנך המזבח עד למחר בשחרית, לכן הקריב קודם הקמת הקלעים, וצ"ל שרחצו תחלה מקיתון של כלי שרת, וכמ"ש במלוחים שרחצו במים בבקר:

    11. Verse 31

      וְרָחֲצ֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן וּבָנָ֑יו אֶת־יְדֵיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶֽם׃

      ורחצו ממנו, שהגם שכבר קדשו ידיהם תחלה כמ"ש וירחץ אותם במים רחצו שמת, וי"ל שרחיצה ראשונה היתה בכלי חול שעדיין לא נתקדשו כלי שרת, או שהיה על פי הדבור שלבי אמר כאשר צוה ה' את משה :

      וַיָּ֣קֶם אֶת־הֶחָצֵ֗ר סָבִיב֙ לַמִּשְׁכָּ֣ן וְלַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וַיִּתֵּ֕ן אֶת־מָסַ֖ךְ שַׁ֣עַר הֶחָצֵ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־הַמְּלָאכָֽה׃ {פ}

      ויכל משה את המלאכה, מבאר שעקר כלוי המלאכה היתה ההקמה האחרונה שנשאר ולא נפרק כי עקר המלאכה מה שהעמד האהל והוכן לעבודה, וזה עשה משה שהקימו בעצמו באופן שגמר המלאכה מיוחס לו לבדו:

    13. Verse 34

      וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וּכְב֣וֹד יְהֹוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃

      ויכס הענן, בברייתא די"ג מדות כתוב אחד אומר ולא יכול משה לבוא אל אהל מועד וכתוב א"ת ובבא משה אל אהל מועד, בא הכתוב הג' והכריע כי שכן עליו הענן, אמור מעתה כ"ז שהיה עליו הענן לא היה יכול לבא, נסתלק הענן נכנס ומדבר עמו, והנה אא"ל שנסתלק הענן דהא כתיב כי ענן ה' על המשכן יומם ואמר ר"פ בהעלותך וביום הקים את המשכן כסה הענן וכו' כן יהיה תמיד הענן יכסנו, מבואר שלא נסתלק הענן עד שהוצרכו לנסוע, רק שביום השמיני היה כבוד ה' שהוא האש הנברא ממלא את המשכן מבפנים והענן יכסה עליו מבחוץ, שזה סימן להגלות השכינה, שלפעמים היה הכבוד מכוסה בענן ולפעמים היה מגולה כמ"ש בסוף פ' משפטים וישכן כבוד ה' על הר סיר ויכסהו הענן [ר"ל שהענן כסה את הכבוד] ששת ימים ויקרא אל משה ביום השביעי מתוך הענן ומראה כבוד ה' כאש אוכלת בראש ההר, ר"ל שאז נתגלה הכבוד מחוך הענן, שהאש אוכלת הוא כבוד נברא שנקרא כבוד ה', וענן וערפל סביביו, ולפעמים הוא מכוסה ואז היה יכול משה לבוא, וכשנתגלה לא יכול לבוא מעצמו, וע"כ כתיב ויקרא אל משה ביום השביעי מתוך הענן, ומפרש טעה הקריאה כי מראה כבוד ה' כאש אוכלת, ר"ל שנתגלה הכבוד ולא יכול לבוא מעצמו, וכן פה נתגלה הכבוד, ולכן לא יכול ליכנס, ומ"ש נסתלק הענן, לאו דוקא כי הענן היה תמיד על המשכן רק שלא היה ענן כזה שהכבוד מלובש בו, כי הכבוד נסתלק מן המשכן אל תחת כנפי הכרובים ואז היה יכול לבוא, וז"ש שלא יכול לבוא מפני ששכן עליו הענן וכבוד ה' מלא, ר"ל שהיה ענן שמלביש את הכבוד ותוך ענן כזה לא יכול לבוא, וכן במלכים (ח' ח') ולא יכלו הכהנים לעמוד לשרת מפני הענן כי מלא כבוד ה' את בית ה' שם היה ענן המלביש את הכבוד, ועמש"ש ששם היה מובדל מכאן שהענן והכבוד שניהם היו בפנים ובכאן היה הענן מבחוץ עיי"ש טעמו, וכשנסתלק הענן החופף את הכבוד היה נכנס אף שהענן עצמו בלא הכבוד היה תמיד והכבוד הזה שנראה בשמיני למלואים הוא עצמו מ"ש וירא אליכם כבוד ה', וירא כבוד ה' אל כל העם, והוא עצמו הכבוד הנראה בעת המרגלים ובמחלוקת קרא ששם כתיב והנה כסהו הענן וירא כבוד ה', שזה היה רק בעת התגלות שכינה, אבל הענן לבדו היה תמיד על המשכן, ויש דעות מתי דבר עמו הפרשיות מן ויקרא עד סוף פרשת המלואים, שי"א שדבר עמו בתחלת ימי המלואים והקריאה רק הזמנה, וי"א שדבר עמו כל פרשיות אלה בשמיני למלואים והיה הקריאה לבוא אל הענן, עיין ברמב"ן. ועיין מה שכתבתי בריש פרשת ויקרא:
