Nehemiah Chapter 6

and no breach was left therein in the wall of the city.

I had not erected that doors were not made in the gates of the city.

in Kefirim This is a name of a place.

[which is] in the Valley of Ono That is the name of the valley.

and they were plotting against me — I understood from them that they were plotting against me to assassinate me there.

“I am doing great work of the buildings (of the city); other editions read: [of the buildings] of dust.

Why should...stop Why should the work be curtailed?

when I leave it Heb — אַרְפֶּהָ, lit. [slacken] my hand from the building.

and come down to you to speak with and to meet with you.

with his servant through his servant.

and an open letter was in his hand He sent me a written letter through him.

It was written in it in that letter.

It is heard among the nations that it is known to all the nations that you and all the Jews are plotting to rebel.

and Gashmu says Gashmu is Geshem the Arab, and its interpretation is like a man who says to his friend, “This is the matter, and so-and-so says.”

according to these words This refers back to the text, and it is a transposed verse. It is as though it was written, “According to these words was heard among the nations, etc.”

...also...speakers Until “...and take counsel together” was written in the letter.

speakers Heb — נְבִיאִים, speakers, like (Isa. 57:19): “I created the speech (נִיב) of the lips.”

saying who say that there is a king in Judea.

and now it will be reported to the king After you have been called king, it will be reported to the king according to these words.

from your heart Heb — כִּי. This כִּי is in place of אֶלָּא, but.

invent them contro(u)ves eles in Old French; you are concocting them, like (I Kings 12:33): “...that he had fabricated (בָּדָה) from his heart.”

For they all for all the nations.

fear us Heb — מְיָרְאִים. They fear us, and so they say, “Let their hands be slackened, etc.”

and now, strengthen my hands to help me with the building of the wall.

and he was confined for he found him at home.

and he said, “Let us meet Shemaiah was a false prophet who had received a bribe from Sanballat and his colleagues to frighten Nehemiah in order to stop the work.

for they are coming to assassinate you for Sanballat and his colleagues will come to assassinate you.

and tonight they are coming Therefore, he warned him to enter the Temple and to close the doors about himself, because the doors of the gates of the city had not been made, as it says at the beginning of the chapter (verse 1): “Also that until that time, I had not erected doors in the gates.”

Will a man like me flee This is a question — Will a man like me flee to enter the Temple?

I will not enter I will not enter there because of fear of death, and I will not transgress the commandments of the Holy One, blessed be He, that a stranger (a non-Kohen) may not enter His Temple.

And I discerned I discerned in his words that the Holy One, blessed be He, had not sent him on this mission, but that he wanted me to commit a transgression because of fear of death.

for he spoke prophesy concerning me for he spoke these words concerning me in the name of prophecy.

had hired him Heb — שְּׂכָרוֹ. Each one of them had hired him and given him pay to frighten me and to curtail the building of the wall.

Because he was hired he told me these things.

in order that I fear in order that I fear them, to do this to enter the Temple and sin.

so that they should have this for a scandal in order that they should have this as a scandal to reproach me with this sin.

and also Noadiah the prophetess She and the rest of the false prophets received pay from Sanballat and his cohorts in order to frighten me with their false prophecies.

on the twenty-fifth day of the month of Ellul, in the twentieth year of King Darius, for in the twentieth year of Darius, Nehemiah went up from Babylon, and in that year he built the ruins of Jerusalem.

after fifty-two days The construction of the wall was completed fifty-two days after they had started building it.

Now it came to pass when all our enemies heard this matter, that the construction of the wall was completed.

that all the nations became frightened when all the nations saw that the construction of the wall of the city had been completed.

and they fell very low in their own eyes They themselves fell in their own eyes; they despised themselves, for the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.

the rulers of Judea Heb — חֹרֵי, the princes of Judea.

to Tobiah Heb — עַל-טוֹבִיָה. He was a renegade Israelite.

and Tobiah’s i.e., Tobiah’s letters.

For many in Judea Heb — רַבִּים, who were great rulers in Judea, were partners in a covenant and an oath with him.

for he was the son-in-law Tobiah [was the son-in-law] of Shechaniah.

and Jehohanan his son [the son] of Tobiah.

the daughter of Meshullam Meshullam was a great man and a ruler.

also of his good qualities His confederates and his kinsmen would speak of them before me.

his good qualities Heb — טוֹבֹתְָיו ses proezes, in Old French, his gallant exploits.

they divulged to him to tell Tobiah.

Tobiah sent letters He constantly sent letters to frighten me so that we would not build the wall.

עד העת ההיא, שלכן היה להם עוד תקוה לבטל המלאכה כי אח"כ נפלו בעיניהם כמ"ש בפסוק ט"ז:

בכפירים, שם מקום, ומצאנו עיר ששמה כפירה בחלק בנימין (יהושע י"ח כ"ו):

כדבר הזה, שגם ביד נערו שלח בע"פ שיתועדו בכפירים והיה בידו אגרת להודיע לו שהדבר נחוץ:

השאלות — (ו - ז) איך שלח אליו ליראו בדברי שקר שהוא הוה למלך ושהעמיד נביאים לקרא עליו שהוא מלך ביהודה, וכי יירא נחמיה מעלילות שקרים?, ומלת כדברים האלה אין להם שחר?:

בגוים נשמע וגשמו אמר, ר"ל גשם הערבי הוא אומר, וכן נשמע בגוים, שמה שאתם בונים החומה הוא מפני שאתם חושבים למרוד, ומ"ש ואתם הוה להם למלך, היא דברי סנבלט, ר"ל הגם שהשמועה שנשמע בגוים אין בה ממש, שעל ידי שרואים בונים חומה דלתים ובריח הם אומרים כן בדרך אומדנא, בשגם שגשם הערבי שאומר זה כבר אמר כן בתחלה בעת שרצו לבנות, א"ל העל המלך אתם מורדים (למעלה ב' י"ט), ונחמיה לא חש לדבריו אז וכ"ש עתה אחר שעושה ברשות המלך, ע"ז הוסיף סנבלט ואתה הוה להם למלך [אומר] כדברים האלה, [מלת אמר שבראש הפסוק נמשך לשנים] שמה שאתה הוה למלך שזה אתה עושה שלא ברשות המלך, [שלא שם אותך רק לפחה לא שתקרא בשם מלך] זה אומר ומברר כדברים האלה שאתם רוצים למרוד במלך ושלתכלית זה בניתם את החומה, עתה פי' מ"ש ואתה הוה להם למלך, כי. וגם נביאים העמדת כי יתבאר (בפסוק י"ב) שטוביה וסנבלט שכרו את שמעיה שהיה נביא שקר שהוא ינבא שיהיה מלך בירושלים, ושנחמיה יהיה המלך, והוא נבא כן אל נחמיה שימלוך. [ובזה אין חשש מרידה כי יוכל להיות שתתקיים הנבואה ברשות מלך פרס שמנה אותו למלך כמו שהיו מלכים רבים תחת יד מלכי פרס] והם שכרו את הנביאים שבעת הצורך יאמרו שנחמיה שכרם לזה לנבא כן וזה מרידה, ועפ"ז ברר לנחמיה שרוצה למרוד, כי העמדה ושכרת נביאים לקרוא עליך שתהיה מלך ביהודה, [וזה היה אמת שנביאי השקר נבאו כן והיו שכירים מצרי יהודה], ועתה ישמע למלך, ובזה תחשב כמורד גם על בנין החומה, ועתה לכה ונועצה יחדו, איך תנצל:

השאלות — (ח - ט) ולמה הוצרך לשלוח אליו לאמר שמלבו הוא בודאם, אחר שהוא שקר גלוי?, ומז"ש כי כולם מיראים אותנו, ומה משמיענו בזה?:

ואשלחה השיב לו שדבר הזה שאני העמדתי נביאים לא נהיה כי מלבך אתם בודאם, וכל מה שאתה מזמין אותי להתיעץ עמך כאילו אתם אוהביי ורוצים לחזק את ידי, זה שקר, כי הלא עד עתה כולם, ר"ל כל צרי יהודה ואתם מכללם, מיראים אותנו לאמר ירפו ידיהם מן המלאכה, ואיך עתה פתאום נהפכת מאויב לאוהב לחזק את ידי?:

השאלות — (י - יג) אם שמעיה דבר זאת בשם ה' איך הכיר שלא ה' שלחו?, והלא לא נזכר כלל שדבר זאת בנבואה שאז היל"ל כה אמר ה' הסתר תוך ההיכל, ומהו הלשון כי הנבואה דבר היל"ל בנבואה דבר?, ומהו הלשון למען שכור הוא שאין לו מובן כלל?:

ואני באתי בית שמעיה, מאז שם על לבו לחקור על הנבואה שנבא שמעיה עליו שיהיה מלך ביהודה והלך לביתו [כי היה עצור וחולה ולא יכול לקרא אותו אליו] לחקור ולדרוש על הדבר, ויאמר נועד אל בית האלהים, זאת לא אמר לו בנבואה, רק שא"ל שנודע לו ע"פ מרגלים כי צרי יהודה באים להרגו, ושרוצים להרגו בלילה הזה, והוא מיעץ אותו שיבא אתו בתוך ההיכל להסגר שם כל הלילה, כי דלתות ההיכל סגורות משא"כ העיר דלתותיה פתוחות:

ואומרה אליו, השיב לו שלא יעשה זאת משני טעמים, א] שבזה אתראה כירא ורך הלבב וזה לא יאות לאיש כמוני, וז"ש האיש כמוני יברח, ב] ומי כמוני אשר יבא אל ההיכל וחי, הלא איני כהן וזר לא יקרב אל הקדש:

ואכירה, ומזה הכרתי כי לא אלהים שלחו, ר"ל שהוא נביא שקר, כי הנבואה דבר עלי, שהוא הוא אשר דבר עלי את הנבואה האמורה למעלה שאהיה מלך על ישראל, ואז הייתי מסתפק אולי היא נבואה אמתית, ועתה הכרתי כי לא אלהים שלחו רק טוביה וסנבלט שכרו, שהם שכרו אותו בין על הנבואה שינבא שאהיה מלך על ישראל, בין על העצה שייעץ אותי ליכנס אל ההיכל, [וזה הכיר עתה מפני שהעצה שיעץ לו עתה סותרת אל הנבואה שנבא עליו קודם, שאם ה' דבר שיהיה מלך על ישראל איך יוכלו לו אויביו להרגו עד שיתחבא מפניהם אל ההיכל, בהפך היל"ל לו אל תירא כי דבר ה' לא ישוב ריקם ומלוך תמלוך, ומזה הכיר שלא ה' שלחו רק שטוביה וסנבלט כ"א שכר אותו לשני המעשים האלה]:

למען, ומפרש למה שכרו אותו שינבא עליו שימלוך על ישראל, שזה למען שכור הוא, למען יעלילו בזה על נחמיה שיאמרו שהוא שכור מנחמיה לנבא עליו כן, כמ"ש סנבלט וגם נביאים העמדת לקרא עליך מלך, ולמה שכרו אותו על העצה הזאת שיברח אל היכל שזה למען אירא ואעשה כן, ובזה ירויחו שתים. א] וחטאתי ואענש בחטא זה, ב] והיה להם לשם רע למען יחרפוני שחללתי את מקדש ה':

זכרה אלהי לטוביה כמעשיו אלה, מה ששכר עליו נביאי שקר, וגם לנועדיה הנביאה, ר"ל לשמעיה ולנועדיה ששניהם היו שכירים לנבאות עליו שימלוך, וליתר הנביאים שהם היו שכירים להפיל עליו מורה ופחד:

בעשרים וחמשה, באותו שנה שעלה משושן, וגמר המלאכה בסוף נ"ב יום:

ויפלו, על כי ידעו כי מאת אלהינו נעשתה, שראו שהוא בהשגחת ה', וע"כ נגמרה בימים מועטים ולא יכלו להשבית המלאכה:

השאלות — (יז) מ"ש גם בימים ההם אין לו קשר עם מ"ש שאויביהם נפלו בעיניהם?:

גם בימים ההם, היא הקדמה אל מה שיאמר בסי' הבא שמנה את אחיו על חומות ירושלים וצוה לשמור העיר גם אח"כ, הגם שהגוים מסביב נפל פחד ה' עליהם עדיין היה להם אבני נגף בני ישראל בעצמם שהריצו אגרות עם טוביה, כי היו בעלי בריתו משני טעמים, א] שהתחתן עם שכניה ומשולם, שהיו שרים גדולים ונכבדים, ב] שהיו אומרים טובות עליו, והחזיקו אותו לאיש טוב וישר, ועי"כ היו מוציאים ג"כ דברי נחמיה וסודותיו אל טוביה, והיה לו מרגלים בין בני ישראל, וגם שלח אגרות ליראני, ולכן נשמר מפניו וצוה על שמירה יתירה גם אחר שנבנתה החומה ולא היה מתירא מן הגוים מסביב:
