Nehemiah Chapter 2

and I carried the wine And I carried the cup of wine and gave it to the king, and so is the custom, that the one who brings wine into the king’s court does not carry it and give it to the king, but the chief butler receives it from the hand of the one who brings it, and carries it and gives it to the king.

And I had never been sad in his presence And I was not accustomed to being sad in his presence, to have a sad face, but to be happy and cheerful, but now I was sad with a sad face.

You are not ill Is it not so that you are not ill?

This is nothing This incident is only wickedness of heart, that you have in your heart to put me to death by poisoning this cup.

And I became very frightened And I became very frightened about this, lest the king accuse me falsely.

Why should my countenance not be sad [as translated,] why should my countenance not be sad.

when the city Jerusalem, which is the place of the graves of my forefathers, is laid waste.

and the queen Heb — וְהַשֵּׁגָל, his wife the queen, as it is stated (Dan. 5:2): “...his queen (שֵּׁגְלָתֵהּ) and his concubine,” for it is customary for Scripture to write “the queen,” next to “the concubine”; his wives and his concubines, like (Song 6:9): “מְלָכוֹת וּפִּילַגְשִּׁים, queens and concubines. “

and he sent me He gave me permission to go.

and I was there for three days I was in Jerusalem for three days, and at the end of three days, I and a few men with me arose at night, and I did not tell any person what the Holy One, blessed be He, had put into my heart.

and there were no animals with me The few men who were with me went by foot and I alone rode on an animal. They did not ride their horses because they wanted to leave the city in secret, without anyone knowing. They went to break and cast down the walls of the city at night and to increase their breaches in order that on the morrow, the people of the city would be eager and agree unanimously with Nehemiah to build the walls of the city. So it appears from the text.

And I went out through the Gate of the Valley I went out through that gate at night with the men who were with me toward En Hattannin and the Dung Gate in the wall of the city; and I broke the wall, and the wall was easily cast down and broken because it had been burned with fire.

which were breached which are those places that were breached, and they breached them more.

And I passed to the Fountain Gate And I wished to pass to those places in the wall of the city and in those breaches, and there was no place in those breaches for riders on animals to pass through because they were so small.

And I ascended And I was ascending from one side at night, and I was breaking the wall with the men who were with me.

and I returned and came And when I returned, I came by way of the Gate of the Valley.

And the prefects who were in the city did not know where I had gone to and what I had done.

yet Heb — עַד כֵּן, until now.

And I said to them On the morrow I said to them.

and we shall no longer be a reproach that our adversaries should not plunder and pillage us.

the hand of my God who gave me favor and success before the king.

for good They intended everything for good—to build the wall of the city and its towers.

and they mocked When our adversaries heard the news of the building of the walls of the city, they mocked us.

are...against the king Are you rebelling against the king by building the wall of the city in order to rebel against him?

but you have no share What do you have in the building of the wall of this city, for you have no share in it.

השאלות — (א) מלת יין לפניו חסר הפעל?, מ"ש ולא הייתי רע לפניו, אין לו ביאור הלא היו פניו רעים?:

ויהי, יין לפניו, מ"ש ואני הייתי משקה למלך נמשך לשתים, ( ואני הייתי משקה ) יין לפניו, (ובשני ר"ל משקה בפעל). ולא הייתי, ר"ל כי המלך היה מקפיד שמשרתיו לא יתראו לפניו ברוע פנים, שאז נחשדו בעיניו כי לבם רע, ונחמיה ידע טבע המלך ולשמור שבבואו לפני המלך יעמוד בפנים שוחקות, ועז"א שבאמת לא היית רע לפניו:

ויאמר, ובכ"ז הרגיש המלך שפניו רעים וקצף ע"ז, והיה זה אם שנכרו על פניו אותות העינוי והצום של הימים האלה, או שהיה בהשגחה שעי"כ ישאלנו המלך וימצא פ"פ לדבר עמו, ונחמיה נתירא מחמת מלך מלאכי מות, כי ידע שזה נחשב אצל המלך לאשמה:

ואומר, ולכן לא הכחיש לאמר שאין פניו רעים, רק אמר שהסבה הוא מה שהעיר בית קברות אבותי חרבה, כי מקום קברות האבות היה יקר וקדוש בעיני הפרסיים:

השאלות — (ד) מ"ש ואתפלל, איך התפלל בעמדו לפני המלך, ולמה לא כתב נוסח התפלה?:

על מה, ר"ל איזה דבר תבקש אם לבנות הקברות או את העיר כולה. אם שאצוה לבנות או שאתה תהיה הבונה ואתפללה, ר"ל בתשובה שהשיב אל המלך היה בלבו הדבור אל ה' בדרך תפלה, שמ"ש אם על המלך טוב היה בלבו אל המלך העליון, שהתפלל שייטב הדבר בעיניו ופועל ידיו ירצה, רק באמירה אמר זאת אל המלך:

אם, ר"ל אם הדבר בעצמו טוב לפניו לבנות את העיר החרבה, ואם ייטב עבדך, להיות השליח לזה, ועז"א אם ייטב עבדך אשר תשלחני, ואם על המלך טוב ואבננה:

השאלות — (ו) הי"ל ואתנה לו זמן וישלחני?:

ויאמר, שיעורו שהמלך והשגל היושבת אצלו שניהם אמרו לו, כמו ויאמר אבימלך ופיכול שר צבאו, ולדעת חז"ל שמלך זה היה דריוש בן אסתר, י"ל שהשגל הזאת היתה אסתר אמו שהיא מהרה בשאלה זאת (שבזה כבר הסכים אל הדבר), באהבתה את עמה ומולדתה. עד מתי, ר"ל מתי תלך ומתי תשוב, וייטב אבל עוד טרם התישב נחמיה לקבוע הזמן הוטב הדבר לפני המלך וישלחני, ר"ל שנתן לי רשות ללכת. ואח"כ ואתנה לו זמן שהיא תשובה על שאלת המלך על זמן מהלכו ושובו:

השאלות — (ז) מהו אשר יעבירוני?, ומי יעביר אותו עד בואו אל הפחות?:

אגרות יתנו לי סופרי המלך בשם המלך, אשר יעבירוני בחיל ופרשים לשמירה כי עד עבר הנהר נתן לו המלך שרי חיל (פסוק ט'):

שומר הפרדס, והוא היה ממונה על יערות הלבנון שהיו למלך — לקרות (מקור מהכבד) לעשות תקרות לשערי הבירה הם שערי הר הבית, שלא היה בנוי עדיין רק הבית לבדו, ולבית אשר אבוא אליו, כי המלך היה בונה בית בכל מדינה שישב בו הפחה והבית היה של המלך, לכן לא אמר לביתי:

וישלח, הוא טעם מי העבירו עד הפחות, שעד עתה היו לו שרי חיל ששלח עמו המלך, שמן שאלתו שיתנו לו אגרות אל הפחות שיעברוהו משם והלאה מובן ששאל שעד שם ישמרוהו חיל המלך:

השאלות — (יב - יח) מדוע לא הגיד לאדם מה שרוצה לעשות?: ומדוע שבר בחומה בלילה?, ומדוע יצא משער הגיא ושב לשם?, ומדוע לא אמר לסגנים לאן הלך?, שכל אלה הדברים הם חדות סתומות, והלא אמר להם תיכף אח"ז מה שיעשה כמ"ש בפי"ח?:

ואקום לילה, שעדין לא רצה לגלות שרוצה לבנות החומה בל יעמדו האויבים תיכף להסטין כאשר השתדלו נגד זה אח"כ, לכן הלך בלילה ורק עם אנשים מעטים והם הלכו רגלי בל יהיה רעש בלכתם:

ואצאה בשער הגיא, שם היה בית נחמיה, וזה מבואר היטב ממ"ש (לקמן י"ב) שהשתי תודות הלכה אחת לימין לשער האשפות (שם פסוק ל"א), והשנית לשמאל למגדל התנורים (שם פסוק ל"ח) מבואר ששתיהן יצאו משער הגיא שהוא בין מגדל התנורים לשער האשפות (לקמן ג' י"א י"ד) ויצאו משם מפני ששם היה בית הפחה, ושער הגיא היה במערב ויצא מביתו לצד דרום ועבר מקום ששמו עין התנים אל שער האשפות שהוא אלף אמה (ג' י"ג), ואהי שבר, נראה שרצה לנסות אם החומה הישינה שנשארה חזקה שלא יצטרכו לסותרה רק למלאות מקומות המפורצים, וכמ"ש (ד' א') כי החלו הפרוצים להסתם, שמשמע שבמקום שלא היה פרוץ עזבו החומה הישינה, ולזה נסה אם יוכל לשבר מקום העומד בידו או אם הוא חזק, ונוסחת הראב"ע היא בשי"ן שמאלית ופי' מענין סברה שעיין בחומה, וזה יעלה היטב לפי דברי:

ואעבור בשער העין ברכת המלך — הוא במהלך לצד דרום (לקמן ג' ט"ו), ואין מקום, שלא יכול לרכוב שם מפני שהיו הפרצות קטנות וירד מן הבהמה והלך רגלי:

ואהי עולה בנחל, הכל לצד דרום, ואמר ואהי עולה כמש"ש ועד המעלות היורדות מעיר דוד, ואשוב משם התחיל לשוב בדרך אשר הלך מדרום לצפון עד שבא לשער הגיא שמשם התחיל ללכת, ואשוב ומשם שב אל ביתו:

והסגנים, שהרגישו שאינו בביתו ולא ידעו אנה הלך ולא ידעו מה אני עושה מפני שלא הגיד להם כלל לאיזה ענין בא לירושלים, ועז"א ליהודים וכו' עד כן, ר"ל עד היום לא הגדתי לשום אדם מענין בנין ירושלים, רק עתה התחיל לאמר אליהם:

ואומר אליהם אתם רואים הרעה, ר"ל מה שאנחנו ברעה מפני צרי יהודה הוא מפני שירושלים חרבה ואין בית מצודות להשגב שם נגד הצר, לכן לכו ונבנה ולא נהיה עוד חרפה, כי יהיה לנו בית מצודות:

העל המלך, כי על הבנין הזה היה כבר פקודה מאת כורש להשבית, [עזרא ד' כ"א] וכתב אשר נכתב בשם המלך אין להשיב, רק ששם נכתב שלא תתבנא עד מני טעמא יתשם, ואם כן היה המלך יכול להשיב ליתן רשיון והם היו להם עתה רשיון וז"ש.

ואשיב אותם דבר, שזה השיב להם שהוא ברשות המלך, ואומר להם ואח"כ א"ל, אלהי השמים, ר"ל לנו יש חלק בירושלים שהיא נחלת אבותינו, וזכרון, כי אלהי השמים יצליח לנו, וישאר מעשה ידינו לזכרון וצדקה, כי אנחנו עבדיו ובונים לשם ה', וא"כ נקום ובנינו, אבל אתם אין לכם חלק כי אתם נכרים, ולא צדקה, כי אינכם עובדים את ה', ולא זכרון ממעשיכם כי ה' לא יצליח לכם:
