    How to learn Gemara

Not a summary to memorise, but a working order: recognise the page, mark the moves of the discussion, decode the recurring Aramaic, and finish one sugya. Every step here opens on a real folio with the tools beside it.

The study sequence, step by step

    1. 1

Recognise the page before reading it

A Talmud folio is a built document: the Gemara in the centre, Rashi on the inner column, Tosafot on the outer, and in the margins Masoret HaShas, Torah Or and Ein Mishpat. Once the layout is familiar, your eye knows where to go instead of hunting mid-sugya.

    2. 2

Start from the Mishnah, not from the debate

Every sugya opens with a Mishnah or a Baraita - the short ruling the discussion is built on. Read it until it is clear, and mark exactly what it leaves open. That gap is where the Gemara begins to work.

    3. 3

Mark the moves: challenge, resolution, proof

The give-and-take repeats in fixed patterns. A challenge opens with mitivi or ini, a resolution with lo kashya or hacha be-mai askinan, a proof with ta shema. Mark each move in the margin, and the sugya reads as a structure rather than a stream.

    4. 4

      Decode the recurring Aramaic

The vocabulary of the give-and-take is smaller than it looks: a few hundred terms recur across the entire Talmud. On the folio pages a click on a word opens its gloss, and glosses can be switched on above every word, on this page and the pages after it.

    5. 5

Turn to Rashi and Tosafot with a defined question

Rashi resolves what was said; Tosafot asks about what was not. Turn to them only after you can state precisely what is unclear - then the commentary is an answer, not another layer of text.

    6. 6

Finish one sugya, then set a tractate

One sugya closed to its end is worth more than ten folios half-read. Pick a short tractate, set a pace you can keep, and review once a week. The tractate finder here opens any tractate at its first folio.

Find a tractate and open its first folio

Type a tractate or an order - Berakhot, Shabbat, Nashim - and open it at its opening folio.
