How do I start learning Gemara from scratch?

Accepted Answer

In three steps: first get to know the layout of the page - what sits in the centre, what is Rashi and what is Tosafot; then learn to spot the moves of a sugya: question, answer, proof; finally read one short sugya from beginning to end, however slowly. Which tractate should I begin with?

Accepted Answer

Two common routes. First: a short, concrete chapter such as Elu Metziot in Bava Metzia - cases of lost and found property, close to daily life and built in clear stages. Second: tractate Berakhot from folio 2a, the opening of the Talmud, dealing with the Shema and prayer. The principle matters more than the choice: one tractate, one chapter, to the end - rather than hopping between tractates.

Can I learn Gemara on my own, without a teacher?

Accepted Answer

You can, if you have a map. What stops a solo learner is rarely the Aramaic - it is losing the thread: who objects to whom, and which answer was rejected. So every sugya here marks question, answer and proof with a fixed colour and sign, and every hard word opens with a click. A study partner or a weekly class adds accountability, but neither is a precondition for opening the Gemara.

How much time a day does it take?

Accepted Answer

Twenty consecutive minutes a day beat two hours once a week, because the thread of the sugya survives between sessions. A beginner who finishes half an amud a week with real understanding is further along than one who covers a full folio and cannot recall the question.

How many folios does the Babylonian Talmud have?

Accepted Answer

In the Vilna edition - the one used in almost every study hall - the Babylonian Talmud is divided into 37 tractates. This site stores 2,704 folios, which is 5,389 pages (a and b sides), with the original pagination that starts every tractate at folio 2a. The pagination is not the author’s but the printer’s: it was fixed in the earliest printed editions and preserved since, which is why a citation such as "Berakhot 35b" points to the same place for every learner.

What is Daf Yomi, and how long is a cycle?

Daf Yomi is the practice of learning one folio a day on a schedule shared worldwide. A full cycle of the Babylonian Talmud at that pace takes about seven and a half years. For a beginner that pace is fast: you can follow a Daf Yomi class for the listening, and in parallel study one chapter in depth at your own pace.

What is the difference between Mishnah, Gemara and Talmud?

The Mishnah is the law in brief, in Hebrew, as edited at the close of the tannaitic period. The Gemara is the amoraic discussion of that Mishnah - questions, sources and rulings - mostly in Aramaic. Together, text and discussion, they are the Talmud. On the printed page the Mishnah opens with the marker matni and its discussion with gem, so recognising those two markers is the first step in reading a folio.

What is the difference between the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmud?

The Bavli was edited in Babylonia, is longer, and develops its discussion at length - it is the basis of study and halakhah in the study hall. The Yerushalmi was edited in the Land of Israel, is terse, and is written in a different, Galilean Aramaic. Someone who has learned a sugya in the Bavli will sometimes find in the Yerushalmi a different formulation that lights up the same question from a second angle.

May a woman learn Gemara?

Accepted Answer

This question has a long tradition of discussion, and it is worth meeting the sources themselves. The Mishnah in Sotah (chapter 3) records a disagreement between Ben Azzai and Rabbi Eliezer about teaching Torah to a daughter, and the Gemara continues that discussion in Sotah 21. Maimonides, Laws of Torah Study (1:13), distinguishes between the Written and Oral Torah. The Chafetz Chaim, in Likutei Halakhot on Sotah 21, wrote that in the conditions of our generation it is right to teach Torah to daughters in order to strengthen faith. In practice, custom differs between communities and streams: in some settings women learn Gemara as a matter of course, and in others they do not. This is a halakhic and communal decision, so for a practical ruling ask the rabbi or teacher you learn with. On this site the texts and tools are open to everyone.

Question 10

At what age can one start?

In common school settings Gemara begins around fourth or fifth grade, usually with the chapter Elu Metziot, because its cases are concrete and its structure clear. An adult starting late is not at a disadvantage: life experience actually helps with sugyot about money and damages.

Question 11

I do not know Aramaic - is that a problem?

Accepted Answer

No. The recurring Aramaic vocabulary of the Talmud is limited: a few hundred words and phrases cover most of a folio. Here every hard word links to the dictionary, the gloss can be shown above the line, and there is a page of the hundred most frequent words.

What are Rashi and Tosafot, and where are they on the page?

Accepted Answer

Rashi explains the Gemara word by word and settles the plain sense; Tosafot raise objections and compare parallel sugyot. In the Vilna edition Rashi is printed in the column beside the binding and Tosafot in the outer column, both in Rashi script. For a beginner: read the Gemara first, then Rashi on those same words, and only once the plain sense is clear turn to Tosafot.

What is "tzurat hadaf", the shape of the page, and why does it matter?

Tzurat hadaf is the fixed layout of the folio: the Gemara in the centre, Rashi and Tosafot at the sides, and in the margins Masoret HaShas, Torah Or, Ein Mishpat Ner Mitzvah, Hagahot HaBach and Gilyon HaShas. Because the layout is identical everywhere, a learner who knows it finds anything on the page without searching. Here you can switch between a readable flow and the folio layout, both with word glosses and text sizing.

How do I read a citation such as "Bava Metzia 21b"?

Accepted Answer

The name is the tractate, the number is the folio, and a or b is the side: a is the front, b the reverse. Every tractate starts at folio 2, since folio 1 carries the title page.

How do I search for a phrase or concept in the Talmud?

Accepted Answer

Site search finds a word, phrase or concept and returns the folios where it appears, ranked by relevance. Inside an open folio there is an in-page search that highlights every match and jumps to it, including inside Rashi and Tosafot.
