    Jeremiah 31 — English translation

Translation: THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition. Verse numbers match the Hebrew text below.

    1. 1At that time—declares G OD —I will be God to all the clans of Israel, and they shall be My people.
    2. 2Thus said G OD : The people escaped from the sword, Found favor in the wilderness; When Israel was marching homeward
    3. 3G OD was revealed long ago. Eternal love I conceived for you then; Therefore I continue My grace to you.
    4. 4I will build you firmly again, O Maiden Israel! Again you shall take up your hand-drums And go forth to the rhythm of the dancers.
    5. 5Again you shall plant vineyards On the hills of Samaria; You shall plant and live to enjoy the fruit.
    6. 6For the day is coming when watchmen Shall proclaim on the heights of Ephraim: Come, let us go up to Zion, To the E TERNAL our God!
    7. 7For thus said G OD : Cry out in joy for Jacob, Shout at the crossroads of the nations! Sing aloud in praise, and say: Save, O E TERNAL One, Your people, The remnant of Israel.
    8. 8I will bring them in from the northland, Gather them from the ends of the earth— The blind and the lame among them, Those with child and those in labor— In a vast throng they shall return here.
    9. 9They shall come with weeping, And with compassion will I guide them. I will lead them to streams of water, By a level road where they will not stumble. For I am ever a Father to Israel, Ephraim is My first-born.
    10. 10Hear the word of G OD , O nations, And tell it in the isles afar. Say: The One who scattered Israel will gather them, And will guard them as a shepherd his flock.
    11. 11For G OD will ransom Jacob, Redeem him from one too strong for him.
    12. 12They shall come and shout on the heights of Zion, Radiant over G OD ’s bounty— Over new grain and wine and oil, And over sheep and cattle. They shall fare like a watered garden, They shall never languish again.
    13. 13Then shall maidens dance gaily, Young men and old alike. I will turn their mourning to joy, I will comfort them and cheer them in their grief.
    14. 14I will give the priests their fill of fatness, And My people shall enjoy My full bounty —declares G OD .
    15. 15Thus said G OD : A cry is heard in Ramah — Wailing, bitter weeping— Rachel weeping for her children. She refuses to be comforted For her children, who are gone.
    16. 16Thus said G OD : Restrain your voice from weeping, Your eyes from shedding tears; For there is a reward for your labor —declares G OD : They shall return from the enemy’s land.
    17. 17And there is hope for your future —declares G OD : Your children shall return to their country.
    18. 18I can hear Ephraim lamenting: “You have chastised me, and I am chastised Like a calf that has not been broken. Receive me back, let me return, For You, O E TERNAL One, are my God.
    19. 19Now that I have turned back, I am filled with remorse; Now that I am made aware, I strike my thigh. I am ashamed and humiliated, For I bear the disgrace of my youth.”
    20. 20Truly, Ephraim is a dear son to Me, A child that is dandled! Whenever I have turned against him, My thoughts would dwell on him still. That is why My heart yearns for him; I will receive him back in love —declares G OD .
    21. 21Erect markers, Set up signposts; Keep in mind the highway, The road that you traveled. Return, Maiden Israel! Return to these towns of yours!
    22. 22How long will you waver, O rebellious daughter? (For G OD has created something new on earth: A woman courts a man.)
    23. 23Thus said G OD of Hosts, the God of Israel: They shall again say this in the land of Judah and in its towns, when I restore their fortunes: “ G OD bless you, Abode of righteousness, O holy mountain!”
    24. 24Judah and all its towns alike shall be inhabited by the farmers and such as move about with the flocks.
    25. 25For I will give the thirsty abundant drink, and satisfy all who languish.
    26. 26At this I awoke and looked about, and my sleep had been pleasant to me.
    27. 27See, a time is coming—declares G OD —when I will sow the House of Israel and the House of Judah with seed of people and seed of cattle;
    28. 28and just as I was watchful over them to uproot and to pull down, to overthrow and to destroy and to bring disaster, so I will be watchful over them to build and to plant—declares G OD .
    29. 29In those days, they shall no longer say, “Parents have eaten sour grapes and children’s teeth are blunted.”
    30. 30But every one shall die for their own sins: whosoever eats sour grapes, their teeth shall be blunted.
    31. 31See, a time is coming—declares G OD —when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel and the House of Judah.
    32. 32It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors, when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, a covenant that they broke, though I espoused them—declares G OD .
    33. 33But such is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel after these days—declares G OD : I will put My Teaching into their inmost being and inscribe it upon their hearts. Then I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
    34. 34No longer will they need to teach one another and say to one another, “Heed G OD ”; for all of them, from the least of them to the greatest, shall heed Me—declares G OD . For I will forgive their iniquities, And remember their sins no more.
    35. 35Thus said G OD , Who established the sun for light by day, The laws of moon and stars for light by night, Who stirs up the sea into roaring waves, Whose name is G OD of Hosts:
    36. 36If these laws should ever be annulled by Me —declares G OD — Only then would the offspring of Israel cease To be a nation before Me for all time.
    37. 37Thus said G OD : If the heavens above could be measured, and the foundations of the earth below could be fathomed, only then would I reject all the offspring of Israel for all that they have done—declares G OD .
    38. 38See, a time is coming—declares G OD —when the city shall be rebuilt for G OD from the Tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate;
    39. 39and the measuring line shall go straight out to the Gareb Hill, and then turn toward Goah.
    40. 40And the entire Valley of the Corpses and Ashes, and all the fields as far as the Wadi Kidron, and the corner of the Horse Gate on the east, shall be holy to G OD . They shall never again be uprooted or overthrown.

    Malbim's commentary

    1. Verse 20

      הֲבֵן֩ יַקִּ֨יר לִ֜י אֶפְרַ֗יִם אִ֚ם יֶ֣לֶד שַׁעֲשֻׁעִ֔ים כִּֽי־מִדֵּ֤י דַבְּרִי֙ בּ֔וֹ זָכֹ֥ר אֶזְכְּרֶ֖נּוּ ע֑וֹד עַל־כֵּ֗ן…

A dear son...God responds to them that there is a difference between someone from the first generations whom God was able to bring back [to God's ways] by showing them godliness, might and wonders, versus now, and there is a difference between a dear son and a little tyke. A little tyke is a small boy who, even if he sins, his father still loves him because he is a little boy and he plays with him. A dear son is a grown man who has many virtues and is dear to because of those virtues, and even if he sins, his father still loves him because he'll remember his virtues and be dear to him. So too, in Egypt, when Israel had no virtue or wholeness, they were like a little tyke in God's eyes, as it is written "when Israel was a youth I loved him." When they were in the wilderness and in the Land of Israel in the early years, they were like a dear son, because they had among them prophets, holy ministers and sages, and then if they sinned, God remembered the righteous among them and forgave their sin. But now "Ephraim is a dear son to me" - behold he has no dearness or importance, and so too "he is a little tyke" -- behold he is not a boy but he has already reached old age, and the parallel statements "Ephraim is a dear son to me...whenever I have turned on him, I remember him even more (every utterance that has the letter bet after it is a reproach) that so too whenever I speak any defamation "I will surely remember" his virtues because he is dear. "he is a little tyke...that is why my heart yearns for him" that my heart will yearn on account of him and "I will surely have mercy" because he is a small boy, I will play with him, and and if so, how can you ask that I do something miraculous and love you as in the days of old?
