    First Generation Amoraim

    Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava

Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava was a First Generation Amora who learned primarily before Rabbi Abbahu. Known for his travels to Babylonia and specific rulings, he engaged in scholarly discussions, often bringing traditions from Babylonia to the Land of Israel.

    דור ראשון לאמוראים.

Since there was also an Amora named Rav Tahlifa in Babylonia, and he was from the Land of Israel, he was therefore called bar Ma'arava, meaning 'son of the Land of Israel'. [ב"מ ז. ברש"י]

He studied Baraitot in the academy of Rabbi Yohanan, but his primary learning was before Rabbi Abbahu, as stated in many places: "Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava taught before Rabbi Abbahu."

Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava happened to be in Babylonia and recited the six long wedding blessings.

In the short blessings, which are not concluded with 'Blessed are You', Rav Tahlifa would add to them. Since he added, he would also conclude them with 'Blessed are You'. However, the Halakha is not like Rav Tahlifa. [כתובות ח.]

From this, we see that he regularly traveled to Babylonia.

    אומר בשם אומרו

Rav Hisda said: "Torah is acquired only through signs," because signs help the student remember his learning. Do not read "place them" but rather "sign them" [referring to the Hebrew word 'שימה' in "שימה בפיהם"]. As it is said: "Put it in their mouths" [דברים לא, יט]. Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava heard this from the Land of Israel and went and said it before Rabbi Abbahu.

Rabbi Abbahu said to him: "You in Babylonia learned it from the words: 'Put it in their mouths.' We learn it from here, as it is written: 'Set up road signs for yourself,' [ירמיה לא, כא] that is, make signs for the Torah." And from where do we know that 'ציונים' (signs/markers) is a term for a sign? As it is written: "And when anyone sees a human bone, he shall set up a sign by it." [יחזקאל לט, טו] That is, to mark that there is a human bone here so that travelers do not become ritually impure. [עירובין נד:]

    רבותיו

Rabbi Yohanan said: "The Holy One, Blessed be He, gives wisdom only to one who possesses wisdom," as it is said: "He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding." [דניאל ב, כא]

Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava heard the words of Rabbi Yohanan and said them to Rabbi Abbahu.

He said to him: "You learn this from the verse in Daniel, but we learn it from here: 'And into the heart of every wise-hearted person I have put wisdom.'" [שמות לא ו]

    אימרותיו

Rav Tahlifa bar Ma'arava taught a Baraita before Rabbi Abbahu: "If one sold the wagon, he sold the mules." Rabbi Abbahu challenged him: "But behold, we have learned: 'If one sold the wagon, he did not sell the mules,' and this contradicts the words of the Baraita!" Rav Tahlifa asked: "Should this Baraita be removed from the Baraitot that I have learned because it is flawed and contradicts the Mishna?"

Rabbi Abbahu said to him: "Do not remove this Baraita, but rather 'translate' it!" That is, interpret the Baraita you have and say that it speaks of mules tied to the wagon, and at the time of sale, they were tied to the wagon. Therefore, he sold everything.

The Mishna speaks of a case where the mules are not tied to the wagon, and therefore the mules are not included in the sale. [בבא בתרא עז:]
