A non-dangerously ill person - the ladder of allowances

    Lesson 51 of 55 20 min

Between danger to life and a "minor ache" there is a ladder. Build the patient ladder and what is permitted at each rung.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Distinguish 4 levels: danger, non-dangerously ill, discomfort, minor ache
    • 02Understand the decree on grinding medicines
    • 03Know what is permitted at each level
    01

    The ladder

    1. 1Dangerously ill - desecrate Shabbat as needed
    2. 2Non-dangerously ill (bedridden) - rabbinic acts with a change; a non-Jew even for Torah-level
    3. 3Discomfort - rabbinic acts with a change per some poskim
    4. 4Minor ache - no medication (decree on grinding herbs)

Source: Shabbat נ״ג ע״ב (53b); SA OC 328. The decree on grinding herbs prevents grinding medicines.
