Chapter 6 · Carrying and techumin

    Techum Shabbat and eruv techumin

    Lesson 46 of 55 18 min

Beyond carrying, there is a walking limit: 2,000 amot outside the city. Learn the source, the measurement and eruv techumin.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Know the source "let no one leave his place"
    • 02Understand measuring 2,000 amot
    • 03Understand how eruv techumin shifts the "place of rest"
    01

    The source

    Exodus 16:29
    שְׁבוּ אִישׁ תַּחְתָּיו אַל יֵצֵא אִישׁ מִמְּקֹמוֹ בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי

Chazal derived techum Shabbat from this. Most Rishonim hold 2,000 amot is rabbinic (Rambam: 12 mil is Torah-level).

    02

    Eruv techumin

One who places food for two meals at a spot before Shabbat establishes it as his "place of rest" and may walk 2,000 amot from it (Eruvin ch. 3). It is effective only for a mitzvah purpose.
