The Foundation: Public and Private Domain
Our journey to building an Eruv begins with understanding the fundamental distinction between a public domain (Reshut HaRabbim) and a private domain (Reshut HaYachid). This is the cornerstone of all laws of carrying on Shabbat.
דתנן: רשות הרבים, כרמלית, רשות היחיד. אלו הן ארבע רשויות לשבת.
As we learned in the Mishna: A public domain, a karmelit, a private domain. These are the four domains for Shabbat.
A Reshut HaRabbim is a broad, open infrastructure, without a roof, at least 16 amot (approx. 7.68 meters) wide, and traversed by 600,000 people daily. A Reshut HaYachid, in contrast, is an enclosed area, surrounded by partitions at least ten handbreadths (approx. 80 cm) high.
The Eruv does not nullify the public domain; rather, it changes its halakhic status. It transforms the area into a large 'private domain,' permissible for carrying.
