    Chapter 3 · Toladot & Rabbinic laws

Weekday activities and "pursuing your affairs"

    Lesson 25 of 55 16 min

Some actions are not melakhah at all, yet do not belong on Shabbat: business, planning work, strenuous effort. Learn the basis of "pursuing your affairs" and its limits.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Know the derashah "your Shabbat speech shall not be like weekday speech"
    • 02Distinguish your forbidden affairs from permitted "affairs of Heaven"
    • 03Know the prohibition of preparing on Shabbat for the weekday
    01

    Three principles

The Gemara (Shabbat קי״ג ע״א (113a)–ק״נ ע״א (150a)) expounds Isaiah 58: "from pursuing your affairs" - your affairs are forbidden, Heaven's affairs permitted; "and speaking words" - weekday speech; "and honor it by not doing your ways" - weekday walking and dress.

    הכנה
One may not do on Shabbat something whose sole aim is for the weekday, even without melakhah (e.g., setting up for after Shabbat).
    02

    Affairs of Heaven

One may discuss charity, matchmaking, and teaching a child Torah or a trade (Shabbat ק״נ ע״א (150a)) - since these are mitzvah needs.

    Insight

Shabbat is not only "not working" - it is a change of pace, speech and awareness.
