The Foundation: The Mishkan as Model
We begin our journey into the world of Shabbat. We build a deep understanding of its principles. At the center stands a fundamental idea: the melakhot of Shabbat are not arbitrary actions. They are derived from a specific structure.
תנו רבנן: כלל גדול אמרו בשבת: כל שהוא צריך לגופו – חייב עליו משום מלאכה.
Our Rabbis taught: They stated a great general principle regarding Shabbat: Any labor that was needed for the construction of the Mishkan – one is liable for it as a melakha.
The Gemara doesn't just define the melakhot. It reveals the heart of Shabbat's philosophy. Shabbat is the cessation of creation. The Mishkan was an expression of human creation. Therefore, stopping the Mishkan's construction is the essence of Shabbat.
