Psalms 124 — English translation

- 1A song of ascents. Of David. Were it not for G OD , who was on our side, let Israel now declare,
- 2were it not for G OD , who was on our side when others assailed us,
- 3they would have swallowed us alive in their burning rage against us;
- 4the waters would have carried us off, the torrent would have swept over us;
- 5over us would have swept the seething waters.
- 6Blessed is G OD , who did not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.
- 7We are like a bird escaped from the fowler’s trap; the trap broke and we escaped.
- 8Our help is the name of G OD , maker of heaven and earth.

- ב׳לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הֹוָה שֶׁהָ֣יָה לָ֑נוּ בְּק֖וּם עָלֵ֣ינוּ אָדָֽם׃
- ג׳אֲ֭זַי חַיִּ֣ים בְּלָע֑וּנוּ בַּחֲר֖וֹת אַפָּ֣ם בָּֽנוּ׃
- ד׳אֲ֭זַי הַמַּ֣יִם שְׁטָפ֑וּנוּ נַ֝֗חְלָה עָבַ֥ר עַל־נַפְשֵֽׁנוּ׃
- ה׳אֲ֭זַי עָבַ֣ר עַל־נַפְשֵׁ֑נוּ הַ֝מַּ֗יִם הַזֵּידוֹנִֽים׃
- ו׳בָּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָ֑ה שֶׁלֹּ֥א נְתָנָ֥נוּ טֶ֝֗רֶף לְשִׁנֵּיהֶֽם׃
- ז׳נַפְשֵׁ֗נוּ כְּצִפּ֥וֹר נִמְלְטָה֮ מִפַּ֢ח י֫וֹקְשִׁ֥ים הַפַּ֥ח נִשְׁבָּ֗ר וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ נִמְלָֽטְנוּ׃
- ח׳עֶ֭זְרֵנוּ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֑ה עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}

אֲ֭זַי חַיִּ֣ים בְּלָע֑וּנוּ בַּחֲר֖וֹת אַפָּ֣ם בָּֽנוּ׃
בחרות אפם בנו — כשחרה אפם בנו. בחרות. כמו בעשות:

אֲ֭זַי הַמַּ֣יִם שְׁטָפ֑וּנוּ נַ֝֗חְלָה עָבַ֥ר עַל־נַפְשֵֽׁנוּ׃
נחלה — לשון חולי:

נַפְשֵׁ֗נוּ כְּצִפּ֥וֹר נִמְלְטָה֮ מִפַּ֢ח י֫וֹקְשִׁ֥ים הַפַּ֥ח נִשְׁבָּ֗ר וַאֲנַ֥חְנוּ נִמְלָֽטְנוּ׃
נפשינו [כצפור] נמלטה — מהם כצפור אשר נמלטה מפח יוקשים:

Verse 1
שִׁ֥יר הַֽמַּעֲל֗וֹת לְדָ֫וִ֥ד לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הֹוָה שֶׁהָ֣יָה לָ֑נוּ יֹאמַר־נָ֝֗א יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
שיר המעלות, ספר איך חסד ה' הצילם משני מיני האויבים, אויבי הגוף ואויבי הנפש, לולי ה', ר"ל שני דברים היה לנו למעוז, א. מה שאנחנו היינו לה', ב. מה שה' היה לנו ר"ל התנאי האחד לתשועתינו היה מה שאנחנו נשעננו בכל לב על ה' ולא שכחנו שמו ותורתו, ועז"א לולי ה' שהיה לנו יאמר נא ישראל, לולא מה שאנחנו אמרנו שה' לנו ובטחנו בו, ב. התנאי השני מה שעי"כ באמת היה ה' לנו, ועז"א.
Verse 2
לוּלֵ֣י יְ֭הֹוָה שֶׁהָ֣יָה לָ֑נוּ בְּק֖וּם עָלֵ֣ינוּ אָדָֽם׃
לולי ה' שהיה לנו באמת בקום עלינו אדם, שע"י שאנחנו בטחנו עליו כן היה גם הוא לנו למושיע, ולולי שני אלה הדברים אז אבדנו בין בגוף בין בנפש, נגד אבדת הגוף אומר.

אֲ֭זַי חַיִּ֣ים בְּלָע֑וּנוּ בַּחֲר֖וֹת אַפָּ֣ם בָּֽנוּ׃
אזי חיים בלעונו בחרות אפם שאז בקום עלינו אדם בחרות אפם בנו להאבידנו היו בולעים אותנו חיים, ונגד אבדת הנפש אומר.
Verse 4
אֲ֭זַי הַמַּ֣יִם שְׁטָפ֑וּנוּ נַ֝֗חְלָה עָבַ֥ר עַל־נַפְשֵֽׁנוּ׃
אזי המים שטפונו שאז בעת שלא חרה אפם בנו לכלותנו רק בהפך היו רוצים לקרב אותנו להיות עמם לעם אחד, אז היו המים שוטפים אותנו, ומבאר כי הנחל מים הזה היה עובר על נפשנו, לא על הגוף רק על הנפש, ומפרש כי

אֲ֭זַי עָבַ֣ר עַל־נַפְשֵׁ֑נוּ הַ֝מַּ֗יִם הַזֵּידוֹנִֽים׃
אז היה עובר על נפשנו הקדושה המים הזידונים, שהמים המליציים כיון בהם על הזדון וכפירת הדת, והדברים מוגבלים נגד מ"ש לולא ה' שהיה לנו שלא שכחנו שמו היו מכלים את הנפש ע"י המרת הדת, ולולא ה' שהיה לנו להושיענו היו מאבדים את הגוף:

בָּר֥וּךְ יְהֹוָ֑ה שֶׁלֹּ֥א נְתָנָ֥נוּ טֶ֝֗רֶף לְשִׁנֵּיהֶֽם׃
ברוך ה', על מה שהושיעם מאבדת הגוף אמר ברוך ה' שלא נתננו טרף לשניהם ובאר שמה שהצילם מאבדת הגוף היה מפני שהיה ה' להם והחזיקו בדתו ותורתו, שעל ידי מה, שנפשנו כצפור נמלטה מפח יוקשים, כי במה שרצו לצוד נפשנו לכפירות הדת נדמינו כצפור שפורשים לפניו כל מיני מאכל לצודו עי"כ בפח, ונפשנו נמלטה ולא נכנסה אל הפח ועמדנו בנסיון, עי"כ הפח נשבר, נשברו האויבים ונשמדו, ואנחנו נמלטנו מידם, ומבאר כי:

עֶ֭זְרֵנוּ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֑ה עֹ֝שֵׂ֗ה שָׁמַ֥יִם וָאָֽרֶץ׃ {פ}
עזרנו הוא בשם ה', מה שאנחנו בוטחים בה' ומחזיקים בו הוא עזרנו, מצד שהוא עושה שמים וארץ, ר"ל שמנהיג הטבע ואשר למעלה ממנה ולכן היה עזרנו השגחיי נסיי לא טבעי:
