Psalms 108 — English translation

- 1A song. A psalm of David.
- 2My heart is firm, O God; I will sing and chant a hymn with all my soul.
- 3Awake, O harp and lyre! I will wake the dawn.
- 4I will praise You among the peoples, O E TERNAL One, sing a hymn to You among the nations;
- 5for Your faithfulness is higher than the heavens; Your steadfastness reaches to the sky.
- 6Exalt Yourself over the heavens, O God; let Your glory be over all the earth!
- 7That those whom You love may be rescued, deliver with Your right hand and answer me.
- 8God promised in the sanctuary that I would exultingly divide up Shechem, and measure the Valley of Sukkoth;
- 9Gilead and Manasseh would be mine, Ephraim my chief stronghold, Judah my scepter;
- 10Moab would be my washbasin; on Edom I would cast my shoe; I would raise a shout over Philistia.
- 11Would that I were brought to the bastion! Would that I were led to Edom!
- 12But You have rejected us, O God; God, You do not march with our armies.
- 13Grant us Your aid against the foe, for human help is worthless.
- 14We shall triumph with God, who will trample our foes.

- ה׳כִּי־גָד֣וֹל מֵעַל־שָׁמַ֣יִם חַסְדֶּ֑ךָ וְֽעַד־שְׁחָקִ֥ים אֲמִתֶּֽךָ׃
- ו׳ר֣וּמָה עַל־שָׁמַ֣יִם אֱלֹהִ֑ים וְעַ֖ל כׇּל־הָאָ֣רֶץ כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ׃
- ז׳לְ֭מַעַן יֵחָלְצ֣וּן יְדִידֶ֑יךָ הוֹשִׁ֖יעָה יְמִֽינְךָ֣ וַעֲנֵֽנִי׃
- ח׳אֱלֹהִ֤ים׀ דִּבֶּ֥ר בְּקׇדְשׁ֗וֹ אֶ֫עְלֹ֥זָה אֲחַלְּקָ֥ה שְׁכֶ֑ם וְעֵ֖מֶק סֻכּ֣וֹת אֲמַדֵּֽד׃
- ט׳לִ֤י גִלְעָ֨ד׀ לִ֤י מְנַשֶּׁ֗ה וְ֭אֶפְרַיִם מָע֣וֹז רֹאשִׁ֑י יְ֝הוּדָ֗ה מְחֹקְקִֽי׃
- י׳מוֹאָ֤ב׀ סִ֬יר רַחְצִ֗י עַל־אֱ֭דוֹם אַשְׁלִ֣יךְ נַעֲלִ֑י עֲלֵי־פְ֝לֶ֗שֶׁת אֶתְרוֹעָֽע׃
- י״אמִ֣י יֹ֭בִלֵנִי עִ֣יר מִבְצָ֑ר מִ֖י נָחַ֣נִי עַד־אֱדֽוֹם׃
- י״בהֲלֹֽא־אֱלֹהִ֥ים זְנַחְתָּ֑נוּ וְֽלֹא־תֵצֵ֥א אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים בְּצִבְאֹתֵֽינוּ׃
- י״גהָבָה־לָּ֣נוּ עֶזְרָ֣ת מִצָּ֑ר וְ֝שָׁ֗וְא תְּשׁוּעַ֥ת אָדָֽם׃
- י״דבֵּאלֹהִ֥ים נַֽעֲשֶׂה־חָ֑יִל וְ֝ה֗וּא יָב֥וּס צָרֵֽינוּ׃ {פ}

Rashi's commentary
Verse 3
ע֭וּרָֽה הַנֵּ֥בֶל וְכִנּ֗וֹר אָעִ֥ירָה שָּֽׁחַר׃
I will awaken the morning — The manner of other kings is that the morning wakes them, while I awaken the morning, in that I rise at midnight, for the harp and lyre awaken me. As the sages said, "A harp was suspended above Davids bed. When midnight arrived a northern wind would blow across it and it would make music on its own.

Verse 1
שִׁ֖יר מִזְמ֣וֹר לְדָוִֽד׃
שיר מזמור לדוד, המזמור הזה הוא לקוח משני מזמורים שכבר נאמרו, מן פסוק ב' עד פסוק ז' נאמר בסוף מזמור נ"ז בברחו מפני שאול במערה, שהיה בתכלית היאוש ונושע פתאום, והתעורר כבודו ואור שחרו, ומן פסוק ז' עד סוף המזמור הוא סוף מזמור ס' ששם ספר ג"כ שכלל ישראל היו בתכלית היאוש, ונדמה להם שה' עזבום ופתאום נושעו, ואח"כ חבר שני הענינים למזמור בפני עצמו לזמר לה' על תשועת היחיד ועל תשועת הכלל, ולזכור על ידו הנס שנעשה לו ושנעשה לעמו, ופרטי פרושי הכתובים כתבנו למעלה במקומות הנזכרים, עיי"ש:
