Verse 3
אף על זה — ההבל והנרקב:
פקחת עיניך — לדקדק בחטאיו:
ואותי — אתה מביא במשפט על עוונותי:
Verse 4
מי יתן טהור — מדבר טיפה סרוחה ושכבת זרע שהוא טמא לא אחד בהם טהור שלא יחטא:
Verse 5
אם חרוצים ימיו — אם גמול זה הוא משתלם שחרוצים וקצובים ליום קבוע ומיועד למיתה:
ומספר חדשיו אתך — קצובים וחוק זה עשית לו ולא יתקיים עוד יותר בעולם די לך בתשלומין הללו:
Verse 6
שעה מעליו — באותו מיעוט חרץ הימים ויחדל לו ממכאוב עד ירצה בזקנותו ותשות כחו, את יום מותו כשכיר הרוצה להשלמת עבודת יומו כי עבירתו מן העולם חלוטה ונצמתת משאר כל העוברים:
Verse 7
כי יש לעץ תקוה — שיחלוף:
ויונקתו אשר מגזעו לא תחדל מהיות ענף:
Verse 9
ועשה קציר — היא יונקת כמו (תהילים פ׳:י״ב) תשלח קציריה עד ים:
נטע — שם דבר הוא וטעם הברתו למעלה בנו"ן וננקד כולו קמץ מפני שהוא סוף פסוק אף מגזרת נטע הוא:
Verse 11
אזלו מים מני ים — ממקום שנהר בא ויוצא ממקורו הבא מאליו מן הים:
והנהר — הבא משם יחרב ויבש לעולם, כן איש שכב ולא יקום:
Verse 14
כל ימי צבאי איחל — לתחייה:
Verse 15
תקרא — תחינה היא קרא אלי ואנכי אענך להוכיח דברי:
תכסוף — תחמוד:
Verse 16
כי עתה — אתה מריע לי:
צעדי — אתה סופר:
לא תשמור — אינך ממתין על חטאתי מלהפרע כמו ואביו שמר את הדבר (בראשית לו) המתין שתתקיים ובלשון משנה (גמ' סנהדרין סג) לא יאמר אדם לחבירו שמור לי בצד עבודת כוכבי' פלונית ל' המתן:
Verse 17
חתום בצרור — חתום ומשומר בצרור בגד ככסף ומרגליות שלא תאבד:
ותטפול על עוני — נתחברת על עוני:
Verse 18
ואולם הר נופל — הר הנופל גבהו יבול ויעשה עפר ותהא לו תקוה ליהנות ממנו וצור אשר נעתק ממקומו גם הוא, יבול לשון תבואה, או:
Verse 19
אבנים — אשר שחקו מים בעברם עליהם תמיד:
תשטף — השטיפו ספיחיה של אבן ליהפך לעפ' ולצמוח בו דב' כאשר יצמח ספיח הקציר שעבר כן יתהפך עפר זה ספיחיה לאבן:
ותקות אנוש — אינה כן אשר משימות אבדה סלה:

תתקפהו — תחזק ממנו ותאנסהו בתקפך ויהלך מן העולם:

יכבדו — יהיו כבידים בכסף ובזהב והוא לא ידע:
ויצערו — וימעטו מכל טוב והוא לא יבין:
Verse 22
אך בשרו עליו יכאב — קשה רימה למת כמחט בבשר החי:

Malbim's commentary

Verse 4
If, despite all the arguments to the contrary, God does in fact govern and there is individual Providence, then it should take account of two factors: (i) man's inherent uncleanliness by reason of the manner of his conception and birth; (ii) that man has no free-will, his fate being predetermined from above..
Verse 7
Rejecting Zophar's thesis that the virtuous receive their real reward in the Hereafter, Job argues that unlike trees that may hope to revive after being cut down, man has nothing to hope for after death.
Verse 13
Even were he to be punished in that eternal world, the punishment would some day end and he would at least have that to look forward to. But the notion that there is another world, where the injustices of this world are corrected, defies reason.
Verse 14
If God is callous towards us in this world and permits injustices, why should He act differently in the other world? And if the next world is fairer than this one, should we not be spending our lives in this imperfect world hoping to die quickly so as to enter the next perfect world as soon as possible?
Verse 17
I am now being made to suffer even though I have not sinned. Will You then be so loving as to cover up my sins however great they may be?
Verse 18
Malbim notes that 'naturalists have agreed that mountains grow' — He is perhaps referring to the hypothesis of a geological uplifting force that balances erosion first proposed by Hutton in 1785 and popularized half a century later by Lyell.
Verse 20
Hope is a cruel illusion, that entices a man when he is young, only to fail him when he becomes old. For when a person dies, there is nothing more. To hope for a life after death is futile.

Verse 1

אָ֭דָם יְל֣וּד אִשָּׁ֑ה קְצַ֥ר יָ֝מִ֗ים וּֽשְׂבַֽע־רֹֽגֶז׃

Humankind, born of woman, is short-lived and sated with trouble,

Verse 2

כְּצִ֣יץ יָ֭צָא וַיִּמָּ֑ל וַיִּבְרַ֥ח כַּ֝צֵּ֗ל וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֽוֹד׃

Blossoms like a flower and withers, Vanishes like a shadow and does not endure.

Verse 3

אַף־עַל־זֶ֭ה פָּקַ֣חְתָּ עֵינֶ֑ךָ וְאֹ֘תִ֤י תָבִ֖יא בְמִשְׁפָּ֣ט עִמָּֽךְ׃

Do You fix Your gaze on such a one? Will You go to law with me?

Verse 4

מִֽי־יִתֵּ֣ן טָ֭הוֹר מִטָּמֵ֗א לֹ֣א אֶחָֽד׃

Who can produce a pure thing out of an impure one? No one!

Verse 5

אִ֥ם־חֲרוּצִ֨ים׀ יָמָ֗יו מִֽסְפַּר־חֳדָשָׁ֥יו אִתָּ֑ךְ חֻקָּ֥ו עָ֝שִׂ֗יתָ וְלֹ֣א יַעֲבֹֽר׃

Their days are determined; You know the number of months; You have set them limits that they cannot pass.

Verse 6

שְׁעֵ֣ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וְיֶחְדָּ֑ל עַד־יִ֝רְצֶ֗ה כְּשָׂכִ֥יר יוֹמֽוֹ׃

Turn away from them, that they may be at ease Until, like a hireling, they finish out their day.

Verse 7

כִּ֤י יֵ֥שׁ לָעֵ֗ץ תִּ֫קְוָ֥ה אִֽם־יִ֭כָּרֵת וְע֣וֹד יַחֲלִ֑יף וְ֝יֹנַקְתּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א תֶחְדָּֽל׃

There is hope for a tree; If it is cut down it will renew itself; Its shoots will not cease.

Verse 8

אִם־יַזְקִ֣ין בָּאָ֣רֶץ שׇׁרְשׁ֑וֹ וּ֝בֶעָפָ֗ר יָמ֥וּת גִּזְעֽוֹ׃

If its roots are old in the earth, And its stump dies in the ground,

Verse 9

מֵרֵ֣יחַ מַ֣יִם יַפְרִ֑חַ וְעָשָׂ֖ה קָצִ֣יר כְּמוֹ־נָֽטַע׃

At the scent of water it will bud And produce branches like a sapling.

Verse 10

וְגֶ֣בֶר יָ֭מוּת וַֽיֶּחֱלָ֑שׁ וַיִּגְוַ֖ע אָדָ֣ם וְאַיּֽוֹ׃

But people languish and die; Humans expire; where are they?

Verse 11

אָֽזְלוּ־מַ֭יִם מִנִּי־יָ֑ם וְ֝נָהָ֗ר יֶחֱרַ֥ב וְיָבֵֽשׁ׃

The waters of the sea fail, And the river dries up and is parched.

Verse 12

וְאִ֥ישׁ שָׁכַ֗ב וְֽלֹא־יָ֫ק֥וּם עַד־בִּלְתִּ֣י שָׁ֭מַיִם לֹ֣א יָקִ֑יצוּ וְלֹֽא־יֵ֝עֹ֗רוּ מִשְּׁנָתָֽם׃

So each of us lies down never to rise— And will awake only when the heavens are no more, Only then be aroused from sleep.

Verse 13

מִ֤י יִתֵּ֨ן׀ בִּשְׁא֬וֹל תַּצְפִּנֵ֗נִי תַּ֭סְתִּירֵנִי עַד־שׁ֣וּב אַפֶּ֑ךָ תָּ֤שִֽׁית־לִ֖י חֹ֣ק וְתִזְכְּרֵֽנִי׃

O that You would hide me in Sheol, Conceal me until Your anger passes, Set me a fixed time to attend to me.

Verse 14

אִם־יָמ֥וּת גֶּ֗בֶר הֲיִֽ֫חְיֶ֥ה כׇּל־יְמֵ֣י צְבָאִ֣י אֲיַחֵ֑ל עַד־בּ֝֗וֹא חֲלִיפָתִֽי׃

Can someone who dies live again? All the time of my service I wait Until my replacement comes.

Verse 15

תִּ֭קְרָא וְאָנֹכִ֣י אֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ לְֽמַעֲשֵׂ֖ה יָדֶ֣יךָ תִכְסֹֽף׃

You would call and I would answer You; You would set Your heart on Your handiwork.

Verse 16

כִּֽי־עַ֭תָּה צְעָדַ֣י תִּסְפּ֑וֹר לֹֽא־תִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר עַל־חַטָּאתִֽי׃

Then You would not count my steps, Or keep watch over my sin.

Verse 17

חָתֻ֣ם בִּצְר֣וֹר פִּשְׁעִ֑י וַ֝תִּטְפֹּ֗ל עַל־עֲוֺנִֽי׃

My transgression would be sealed up in a pouch; You would coat over my iniquity.

Verse 18

וְ֭אוּלָם הַר־נוֹפֵ֣ל יִבּ֑וֹל וְ֝צ֗וּר יֶעְתַּ֥ק מִמְּקֹמֽוֹ׃

Mountains collapse and crumble; Rocks are dislodged from their place.

Verse 19

אֲבָנִ֤ים׀ שָׁ֥חֲקוּ מַ֗יִם תִּשְׁטֹֽף־סְפִיחֶ֥יהָ עֲפַר־אָ֑רֶץ וְתִקְוַ֖ת אֱנ֣וֹשׁ הֶאֱבַֽדְתָּ׃

Water wears away stone; Torrents wash away earth; So you destroy a mortal’s hope,

Verse 20

תִּתְקְפֵ֣הוּ לָ֭נֶצַח וַֽיַּהֲלֹ֑ךְ מְשַׁנֶּ֥ה פָ֝נָ֗יו וַֽתְּשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃

You overpower him forever and he perishes; You alter his visage and dispatch him.

Verse 21

יִכְבְּד֣וּ בָ֭נָיו וְלֹ֣א יֵדָ֑ע וְ֝יִצְעֲר֗וּ וְֽלֹא־יָבִ֥ין לָֽמוֹ׃

His children attain honor and he does not know it; They are humbled and he is not aware of it.

Verse 22

אַךְ־בְּ֭שָׂרוֹ עָלָ֣יו יִכְאָ֑ב וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ עָלָ֥יו תֶּאֱבָֽל׃ {פ}

He feels only the pain of his flesh, And his spirit mourns in him.
