Kiddush and Havdalah - "Zakhor" in action

    Lesson 3 of 55 18 min

"Zakhor" is not a feeling - it is an act. Chazal derived from it Kiddush at Shabbat's entry and Havdalah at its exit. Build the frame: source, time, place and order.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Identify the source for Kiddush in Pesachim ק״ו ע״א (106a)
    • 02Distinguish night Kiddush from daytime Kiddush
    • 03List the four Havdalah blessings
    01

From the verse to the cup

    Exodus 20:7
    זָכוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ

The Gemara (Pesachim ק״ו ע״א (106a)) expounds: "remember it over wine" - remembering is done in speech, through Kiddush.

According to Rambam (Shabbat 29:1) the Torah obligation is speech, and wine is a rabbinic enactment. Night Kiddush is primary; daytime Kiddush ("Kiddusha Rabba") is an enactment of honor.

    אין קידוש אלא במקום סעודה
Kiddush must be adjacent to a meal in the same place (Pesachim ק״א ע״א (101a)).
    02

    Havdalah - an ordered exit

    1. 1Wine - the blessing on the vine
    2. 2Spices - "who creates kinds of spices"
    3. 3Fire - "who creates the lights of fire"
    4. 4Havdalah - "who separates between holy and mundane"
    Insight

Chazal's mnemonic for the order is YaVNeHaZ (and YaKNeHaZ when Yom Tov follows Shabbat). The mnemonic is a memory tool, not a replacement for the siddur.

    Practice

Write the Havdalah order from memory, then check against a siddur.

    Lesson wrap-up

Shabbat opens and closes with speech. "Zakhor" and "Shamor" work together.
