This siman contains one se'if. Shevuot (oaths) and nedarim (vows) may be annulled [meaning those that a person makes privately], even if the person took the oath with explicit mention of the Divine Name. (Such is the established practice, in accordance with the Talmud and the halachic authorities; see Beit Yosef.) Rema: Nevertheless, one should not seek annulment of it initially except under pressing circumstances; see above, siman 203. (The Geonim, and וע״פ.) Any vow whose annulment involves even a trace of transgression must not be annulled. (R. David Cohen and Rivash, siman 432.) Some say that whenever a person swore not to do something—for example, he swore not to sell a particular item—and he transgressed and sold it, his sale has no effect, since he violated his oath. (Mordechai, glosses to Shevuot.)
