Nehemiah Chapter 1 presents 11 verses in a searchable Hebrew text unit. This original reading guide identifies observable themes and a practical path through the chapter without adding an unverified interpretation.

    Text map

Begin with the opening verses, notice repetitions and transitions, then use the verse index to return to the exact line. The verse index is especially useful for following repeated words and changes in scene or voice.

    Reading lens

Read the passage once for its sequence of ideas, then return to the words that carry the argument or image. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

A unit-by-unit map of all 11 verses on this page: opening words, the moves the text actually makes and a link back to that exact verse.

    Rashi's commentary

    1. Verse 1

The words of Nehemiah, etcNehemiah wrote this book from here on.

the twentieth year This refers to the twentieth year of King Darius, who is identical with Artaxerxes. In Tractate Rosh Hashanah (3a, b), we find that the phrase “the twentieth year” is mentioned twice using similar wording [to teach us that it is speaking of the identical year]. It states below (2:1), “And it came to pass in the month of Nissan of the twentieth year of Artaxerxes, etc.” The years were calculated from the month of Tishrei. It says here, “And it was in the month of Kislev of the twentieth year, etc.” This refers to the Kislev coming after Tishrei. Further down it says (2:1), “And it was in the month of Nissan of the twentieth year, etc.” This refers to the Nissan of the same year. And I cannot explain that they calculated their years from the month of Nissan and that the incident mentioned below: “And it was in the month of Nissan, etc.” occurred before this incident: “And it was in the month of Kislev, etc.” It is true that events [in the Torah] are not necessarily recorded in chronological order. Nevertheless, the chapters indicate that the second chapter took place only because of the events of the first chapter.

    2. Verse 2

one of my brethren one of my companions.

and I asked them about the Jews I asked them about the Jews who had escaped the Babylonian captivity and remained in Jerusalem.

who had escaped because they were saved from the Babylonian exile.

and about Jerusalem And I asked them about the city.

    3. Verse 3

And they said to me They answered my first question first and my latter question last; first, concerning the Jews and afterwards, concerning the wall and the gates.

who remained Those Jews who remained in the province of Jerusalem are in great trouble and reproach because the gentiles plunder and pillage them.

and the wall of Jerusalem is breached And the wall of the city is breached, and the gates are burned with fire as they were before, for Israel had not built the wall of the city or its gates, only the Temple.

      were burned Hebנִצְתוּ, like נֻצְתוּ.

    4. Verse 4

      for days Hebיָמִים, many days.

    5. Verse 5

I beseech You Hebאָנָא, an expression of request and supplication.

    6. Verse 6

attentive Hebקַשֶּׁבֶת, like קוֹשֶּׁבֶת, listening, for just as one says from אוֹהֵב, אָהַב, so does one say from קָשַּׁב, קוֹשֵּׁב and קוֹשֶּׁבֶת.

    7. Verse 7

We have dealt corruptly Hebחֲבֹל, a noun, an expression of corruption, since the “heth” is vowelized with a “hataf pattah,” and I cannot interpret it as a verb form, because in that case, it would have to be vowelized with a large “kamatz.”

we have dealt corruptly Hebחָבַלְנוּ, an expression of corruption, as in Daniel (6:23): “I have done no harm.”

    8. Verse 9

if your exile is like the matter that is stated (Deut30:4): “If your exile is at the end of the heavens, etc.”

    9. Verse 11

I beseech You, O Lord, may Your ear now be attentive At the beginning of his prayer he used this expression, and so after his prayer.

Your servant This is what he prayed for himself.

before this man before the king.

butler Hebמַשְּׁקֶה, like (Gen. 40:1): “...the butler of (מַשְּׁקֶה) the king of Egypt.” This is what I explained above (Ezra 2:63) according to the words of our Sages, that Hattirshatha is Nehemiah.

    1. Verse 1

    2. Verse 2

    3. Verse 5

    4. Verse 6

    5. Verse 7

    6. Verse 8

    7. Verse 10

    8. Verse 11

The narrative of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah: In the month of Kislev of the twentieth year, when I was in the fortress of Shushan,

Hanani, one of my brothers, together with some Judahites, arrived, and I asked them about the Jews, the remnant who had survived the captivity, and about Jerusalem.

They replied, “The survivors who have survived the captivity there in the province are in dire trouble and disgrace; Jerusalem’s wall is full of breaches, and its gates have been destroyed by fire.”

When I heard that, I sat and wept, and was in mourning for days, fasting and praying to the God of Heaven.

I said, “O E TERNAL One, God of Heaven, great and awesome God, who stays faithful to the covenant with those who show love and keep the commandments!

Let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open to receive the prayer of Your servant that I am praying to You now, day and night, on behalf of the Israelites, Your servants, confessing the sins that we Israelites have committed against You, sins that I and my father’s house have committed.

We have offended You by not keeping the commandments, the laws, and the rules that You gave to Your servant Moses.

    זְכׇר־נָא֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוִּ֛יתָ אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֥ה עַבְדְּךָ֖ לֵאמֹ֑ר אַתֶּ֣ם תִּמְעָ֔לוּ אֲנִ֕י אָפִ֥יץ אֶתְכֶ֖ם בָּעַמִּֽים׃

    Be mindful of the promise You gave to Your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples;

    וְשַׁבְתֶּ֣ם אֵלַ֔י וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ מִצְוֺתַ֔י וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם אֹתָ֑ם אִם־יִהְיֶ֨ה נִֽדַּחֲכֶ֜ם בִּקְצֵ֤ה הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ מִשָּׁ֣ם אֲקַבְּצֵ֔ם (והבואתים) [וַהֲבִֽיאוֹתִים֙] אֶל־הַמָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּחַ֔רְתִּי לְשַׁכֵּ֥ן אֶת־שְׁמִ֖י שָֽׁם׃

but if you turn back to Me, faithfully keep My commandments, even if your dispersed are at the ends of the earth, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I have chosen to establish My name.’

For they are Your servants and Your people whom You redeemed by Your great power and Your mighty hand.

    אָנָּ֣א אֲדֹנָ֗י תְּהִ֣י נָ֣א אׇזְנְךָֽ־קַ֠שֶּׁ֠בֶת אֶל־תְּפִלַּ֨ת עַבְדְּךָ֜ וְאֶל־תְּפִלַּ֣ת עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ הַֽחֲפֵצִים֙ לְיִרְאָ֣ה אֶת־שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וְהַצְלִֽיחָה־נָּ֤א לְעַבְדְּךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וּתְנֵ֣הוּ לְרַחֲמִ֔ים לִפְנֵ֖י הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֑ה וַאֲנִ֛י הָיִ֥יתִי מַשְׁקֶ֖ה לַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ {פ}

O Lord! Let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who desire to hold Your name in awe. Grant Your servant success today, and dispose his master to be compassionate toward him!” I was the king’s cupbearer at the time.
