Orach Chayim Siman 203

Orach Chayim Siman 203 is a source-text unit from the Shulchan Arukh with 8 seifim. Its reading map separates the practical rule, its conditions and the points that need comparison with the surrounding text.

    What to track

Read each seif as a separate step. Identify the action, the condition that limits it and any distinction between cases before moving to the next seif.

    Study lens

Look for a turn toward a more precise resolution. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

    Original text

    1. On fruit from the ground one recites Borei peri ho'adomoh

    2. For strawberries that grow on a bush, the blessing is Borei Pri Ha'adamah. Rema: Something is only called a tree if its leaves grow from the wood of the plant. If the leaves grow from its roots, it is not called a tree. These plants, since their stems completely wither away in the winter and then regrow from their roots, are blessed with Borei Pri Ha'adamah. (Tur and Mordechai in the name of a responsum of the Geonim)

    3. On bananas on recites Borei peri ho'adomoh

4.For fruits produced by non-fruit-bearing (wild or uncultivated) trees, the blessing is Shehakol.

    5. Even though the fruits of the asa plant, when cooked, become like fruit, one recites only Shehakol over them.

    6. For ginger that is preserved while still fresh, the blessing is Borei Pri Ha’adamah. It appears that the same applies if it is preserved when dry, since through this process it becomes fit for eating; the ginger remains the primary substance, and one recites Borei Pri Ha’adamah over it.

    7. For spices that have been ground and mixed with sugar, the spices are the primary ingredient, and one recites over them the blessing appropriate for those spices.

    8. For a radish, one recites Borei Pri Ha’adamah.
