How to learn Gemara on your own: where to start
You do not need to be a scholar to start. You need tools. Learn them in the right order and you read a page of Gemara yourself.
1. Divide into sentences
The Gemara has no punctuation. The first tool is spotting where each sentence starts and ends: who asks, who answers.
2. Aramaic
A few dozen words repeat on every page. Know them and the page opens.
3. The terms of debate
“Eitivei”, “Ta shema”, “Teyuvta” - each term signals a fixed move: a challenge, a proof or an answer.
4. The logic of the sugya
Arrange the moves into a diagram and see the structure of the whole sugya.
