Shulchan Arukh Yoreh De'ah 254 — English translation

- 1An Israelite is forbidden to accept charity from heathens in public. But if he cannot subsist on Jewish charity alone and he is unable to receive it from heathens without public notice,—in that case it is permitted.
- 2If a heathen prince donates money for Jewish Charities, the money should be accepted for the sake of peace; but it should be distributed among non-Jewish poor secretly so that the prince might not hear of it. RMI.—Some hold that if he specified the purpose, the money should be devoted to that purpose. But donations towards the erection of a synagogue are always accepted.

שלא לקבל צדקה מאחרים. ובו ב' סעיפים:
אסור לישראל ליטול צדקה מן העובד כוכבים בפרהסיא ואם אינו יכול לחיות בצדקה של ישראל ואינו יכול ליטלה מהעובד כוכבים בצינעא הרי זה מותר:
שר עובד כוכבים ששלח ממון לישראל לצדקה אין מחזירין אותו משום שלום מלכות אלא נוטלין ממנו וינתן לעניי עובדי כוכבים בסתר כדי שלא ישמע השר: הגה וי"א דיעשה בהן מה שצוה לו המושל (כך משמע מפירש"י ותוס' מעובדא דאימיה דשבור מלכא) וכל זה דוקא כשנותנין מעות לצדקה אבל אם מנדבין דבר לבית הכנסת מקבלים מהם (ב"י בשם התוספות סי' רנ"ט בשם מ"כ והוא בדינים והלכות מהרי"ו סי' ס"ז וכן הוא בהג"ה בא"ח סי' קנ"ד סי"א) אבל לא מן המומר (ג"ז שם) ועיין לקמן סי' רנ"ט סעיף ד':
