Shulchan Arukh Orach Chayim 509 — English translation
Translation: Sefaria Community Translation. Section numbers match the Hebrew text above.
- 1Several specific laws regarding the laws of Yom Tov, containing seven sections: A skewer that has been flattened, even though one could straighten it by hand, one may not fix it. Rema: This is specifically when one can roast with it without fixing it. But if one cannot roast with it as is, and it broke on Yom Tov itself, it is permitted to fix it (Tur). However, we do not instruct this to the public (Rabbi Yerucham, vol. 3), lest they come to fix it even when it broke before Yom Tov. And the same law applies to all utensils that are impossible to prepare before Yom Tov.
- 2A skewer that one wishes to roast with, if it was longer than necessary—it is forbidden to cut it or to burn it. One may not sharpen a knife with its whetstone, but one may sharpen it upon wood, earthenware, or stone. This ruling is not taught to the public, lest they come to sharpen with a whetstone. When does this apply? When the knife can cut with difficulty or has become nicked. But if it cannot cut at all, one may not sharpen it even upon wood, lest one come to sharpen it with a whetstone.
- 3Poultry that one fills with meat and eggs—it is permitted to sew them on Yom Tov, provided that he prepares the thread before Yom Tov and places it in the needle, and he should be careful not to cut the thread on Yom Tov. Rema: And so they customarily burn the thread that remains in the bird after they sewed with it.
- 4It is permitted to cut on a Festival the bindings of young goats and fowl that are tied, and the threads that are sewn, and likewise one may burn a wick or rag with which the fowl is tied.
- 5It is permitted on Yom Tov to heat an iron utensil in which cheese flatbreads were baked, and after the heating to bake in it a meat pastry, provided that when it is heated, it is placed on the food immediately. However, if it has absorbed [flavor] from non-kosher meat or the like, it is forbidden to heat it even to bake permitted food in it. Rema: Similarly, it is forbidden to purge vessels on Yom Tov (Mordechai end of Yoma, Or Zarua, and Hagahot Maimoniot chapter 1). And it is permitted to heat a spit on which unsalted meat was roasted when one wishes to roast with it again on Yom Tov (Maharai of Prague).
- 6It is prohibited to make hole in a new barrel
- 7To immerse a new utensil on Yom Tov, its law is the same as on Shabbat, as stated in section 223:7. Rema: And the law of rinsing and scrubbing utensils on Yom Tov — their laws are the same as on Shabbat, as stated in section 223. And it is permitted to move muktzeh (set-aside items) for the purpose of food preparation and the joy of Yom Tov.
