Shulchan Arukh Orach Chayim 490 — English translation
Translation: Sefaria Community Translation. Section numbers match the Hebrew text above.
- 1Order of Prayers for the Second Day and Chol HaMoed (Intermediate Days) of Passover (Nine Sections): On the second day of Yom Tov the Torah reading is from Parashat Emor, starting from "שור או כשב" (An ox or a sheep) until the end of the section and the Maftir reading is the same as on the first day. The Haftarah is from Melachim Bet (Kings II), from "וישלח המלך" (And the king sent) until "ואחריו לא קם כמוהו" (And after him, none arose like him), recounting the Passover of King Josiah.
- 2Chol HaMoed (Intermediate Days): The Ma’ariv, Shacharit, and Mincha prayers follow the usual weekday format. Ya’aleh V’Yavo is added in the Avodah section of the Amidah. If one forgets to say Ya’aleh V’Yavo, they must repeat the Amidah. It is also recited in Birkat HaMazon, but if omitted, one does not need to repeat it. Mussaf follows the format of Yom Tov Mussaf. Gloss: When reaching "על ידי משה עבדך כאמור" (Through Moses, Your servant, as it is stated...), one recites "והקרבתם עולה וגו’" (And you shall offer a burnt offering...) until "ושני תמידים כהלכתם" (And two daily offerings as prescribed) (Tur).
- 3On Yom Tov, it is customary to say "את יום טוב מקרא קודש הזה" (This Yom Tov, a holy convocation). On Chol HaMoed, one says "את יום מקרא קודש הזה" (This day, a holy convocation). Gloss: Some have the custom not to say "מקרא קודש" at all, neither on Yom Tov nor on Chol HaMoed (Tur).
- 4On Chol HaMoed and the Last Two Days of Yom Tov, Hallel is recited with omissions (Hallel b’Dilug), similar to Rosh Chodesh.
- 5A mnemonic to remember the Torah readings for the eight days of Pesach: "משך תורא קדש בכספא פסל במדברא שלח בוכרא" This order only changes when Pesach begins on Thursday, in which case the third day (which falls on Shabbat) has a special reading: "ראה אתה אומר אלי", corresponding to פסל. On the first three days, the readings remain קדש בכספא במדברא.
- 6On Chol HaMoed and the Last Two Days, the fourth aliyah reads from the second Torah scroll, recounting the additional offerings (Korban Mussaf) from Parashat Pinchas, beginning with "והקרבתם" (And you shall offer...) until the end of the section.
- 7On the Last Night of Yom Tov, Kiddush is recited over wine, but the blessing Shehecheyanu (Zman) is not said. Gloss: In both the prayer and Kiddush, we say "זמן חירותינו" (the season of our freedom), as on the first Yom Tov (Maharil & Minhagim).
- 8On the seventh day, the Haftarah is "וידבר דוד" (And David spoke...). On the eighth day, the Haftarah is "עוד היום בנוב לעמוד" (Today, he will stand in Nob...).
- 9Shabbat that Falls on Chol HaMoed: The Ma’ariv, Shacharit, and Mincha prayers follow the usual Shabbat format, with Ya’aleh V’Yavo added in the Avodah section. In Mussaf, one follows the order for Chol HaMoed but includes Shabbat: "ותתן לנו את יום המנוח הזה ויום חג המצות הזה" (And You have given us this day of rest and this festival of Matzot). The conclusion is: "מקדש השבת וישראל והזמנים" (Who sanctifies the Shabbat, Israel, and the festivals). The Haftarah is "היתה עלי". Gloss: The blessing on the Haftarah does not mention Pesach, neither in the middle nor at the end. It is customary to read Shir HaShirim on Shabbat Chol HaMoed. If Shabbat falls on the last day of Yom Tov, Shir HaShirim is read then instead. Similarly, on Sukkot, Kohelet is read, and on Shavuot, Ruth is read (Abudraham). The common custom is not to recite a blessing on the reading of these Megillot, neither "על מקרא מגילה" nor "על מקרא כתובים".
