Shulchan Arukh Orach Chayim 397English translation

Translation: Sefaria Community Translation. Section numbers match the Hebrew text above.

    1. 1Laws of an individual's Shabbat rest, his vessels, and traveling two thousand cubits. Contains 18 sections Every person has two thousand cubits in each direction beyond his four cubits or beyond the place where he spent Shabbat.
    2. 2If Shabbat came upon him in an open valley and he does not know the Shabbat boundary, he may walk two thousand steps (of average size) (Tur) which constitute the Shabbat boundary.
    3. 3Just as a person may not walk on Shabbat and Yom Tov more than two thousand cubits in each direction, so too his vessels and animals — no person may take them beyond the two thousand cubits of their owner. If the owner made an eruv in one direction, no person may take them in the other direction even one step to a place where the owner cannot go. Rema: See above at the end of Siman 305 regarding whether one may hand over an animal to a non-Jew in a place where there is concern he may take it beyond the boundary.
    4. 4One who handed over his animal to his son — it follows the father's boundary.
    5. 5If he handed it to a shepherd — even if he gave it to him on Yom Tov — it follows the shepherd's boundary. If he handed it to two shepherds, it follows the owner's boundary since neither one acquired it.
    6. 6An ox designated for slaughter follows the boundary of whoever purchased it to slaughter on Yom Tov. Similarly, if the owner slaughtered it on Yom Tov and sold the meat, each buyer may take his portion wherever he goes.
    7. 7A shepherd's ox follows the boundary of the people of that town.
    8. 8Vessels designated for one of the brothers in a household follow his boundary, and those not designated for any one of them may only be taken to a place where all of them can go.
    9. 9Two people who borrowed a garment — one to wear in the morning and one in the evening — may only take it to a place where both can go. If one made an eruv toward the end of two thousand cubits to the east and the other to the west, it may not be moved from its place.
    10. 10Two people who purchased an animal together and slaughtered it on Yom Tov — even if each took his portion — all the meat follows both their boundaries. But if they purchased a barrel of wine and divided it on Yom Tov, each one's portion follows his own boundary.
    11. 11One who borrowed a vessel from his fellow before Yom Tov — even if he did not take it until nightfall — it follows the borrower's boundary. If he borrowed it on Yom Tov, even if he customarily borrows it every Yom Tov, it follows the lender's boundary.
    12. 12A woman who borrowed water and salt from her friend for her dough and spices for her pot on Yom Tov — the dough and the cooked dish follow both their boundaries.
    13. 13If one took a coal from his fellow on Yom Tov, he may only take it according to the giver's boundary. But if he lit a candle or piece of wood from his fellow's flame, it follows the boundary of the one who lit it.
    14. 14A private cistern follows the boundary of its owner. One belonging to that town follows the boundary of the town's residents. One that is ownerless follows the boundary of whoever draws from it.
    15. 15Flowing rivers and springing wells follow the boundary of whoever draws from them. If they flow from outside the boundary into the boundary, one may draw from them on Shabbat, and needless to say on Yom Tov.
    16. 16If one drew water from an ownerless cistern for his fellow, it follows the boundary of the one who drew it.
    17. 17One who had produce deposited in another town far from him — if the residents of that town made an eruv to come to him, they may not bring him his produce, since his produce follows his boundary. This applies when he designated a specific corner for them; but if he did not designate a specific corner, it follows the boundary of the one with whom it is deposited.
    18. 18One who invited guests to his home on Yom Tov — they may not take portions with them to a place where the host cannot go, unless he transferred ownership of those portions to them before Yom Tov through another person.
