    Gender, Number, Definiteness

Nouns have gender (m/f), number (sg/pl), and three states: determined ("ָא" suffix: מַלְכָּא = the king), absolute (מַלֵךְ), and construct (מַלְכוּת ד… = "kingdom of…").

    Noun Patterns & Word Formation

Most sugya nouns are built on a handful of recurring patterns. Recognising the pattern saves a dictionary lookup: once you see that a word is an action noun or an instrument noun, you have already guessed its sense.

    PatternFunctionExamples
    קְטָלָאAction nounשְׁמָעָא · טַעֲמָא
    ־וּתָאAbstract nounמַלְכוּתָא · רְשׁוּתָא

    ־נָאInstrument / agentלִישָׁנָא · דַּיָּינָא
    ־אֵיDetermined pluralרַבָּנַן · מִילֵּי
Note the deceptive pair: מִילְתָא (a matter) versus מִילֵּי (matters, claims). This is a frequent source of error in reading הני מילי.

Pronominal Suffixes on Nouns & Prepositions

Possessive suffixes attach to determined nouns (free pronouns are independent words). The same suffixes attach to prepositions and to verbs (as direct object).

    PersonOn noun (horse)On prep. "to"
    1sסוּסִילִי
    2msסוּסָךְלָךְ
    2fsסוּסִיךְלִיךְ

    2mpסוּסַיְכוּלְכוּ
    3mpסוּסַיְהוּלְהוּ
    3fpסוּסַיְהֵיןלְהֵין
Master these suffixes - they are the connective tissue of the sugya: אֲמַר לֵיהּ ("he said to him"), קָמַשְׁמַע לַן ("it teaches us"), פְּלִיגִי בַּהּ ("they dispute it").
    ה

    Adjectives & Agreement

Adjectives agree with the noun in gender, number, and state. The noun precedes the adjective: גַּבְרָא רַבָּא ("a great man"), מִילְּתָא זוּטַרְתָּא ("a small matter").

    Numbers, Time & Measures

Numerals and measures recur in every sugya dealing with money or time, and they are often precisely the words that stall a reading.

    Measures & currencyזוּזָא · מָנֵי · גַּרְמִידֵי · תַּרְקַבָּא
תְּרֵי is masculine, תַּרְתֵּי feminine — hence תַּרְתֵּי מִילֵּי ("two matters") versus תְּרֵי גַּבְרֵי ("two men"). קַמָּא/בָּתְרָא mean not only "first/last" but also name chapters and tractates (Bava Kamma, Bava Batra).
