    Decoding the verse

    Megillah 7a

“Portions” in the plural - two portions to one person. “Gifts to the poor” - a gift to each of two poor people.

    1. 1Portions - plural, so two
    2. 2To his friend - singular, so one person
    3. 3The poor - plural, so two poor people

    The Purim meal

    Megillah 7b

A night meal does not fulfill the Purim meal obligation.

    Raya

Rava reads days of feasting and joy as requiring a daytime meal. The gift narratives illustrate giving between friends.
