    Chapter 2 · The 39 Avot Melakhot

Garment order I - Shearing, bleaching, combing, dyeing, spinning

    Lesson 8 of 28 22 min

Five melakhot that prepare thread. Common modern toladot: cutting nails (shearing), removing stains (bleaching), makeup (dyeing).

    Lesson goals
    • 01Understand why cutting hair and nails is biblically forbidden
    • 02Distinguish permitted washing (light soaking) from forbidden (scrubbing)
    • 03Know the poskim dispute on makeup on Shabbat
    01

    Gozez: Beyond the Wool

The first melakha in the garment-making sequence is 'Gozez' (Shearing). In the Mishkan, this act involved shearing wool from sheep to prepare threads and garments. But its meaning extends far beyond that.

    משנה שבת ז:ב
הגוזז צמר כבשים... הרי זה חייב משום גוזז.

One who shears wool from sheep... is liable for Gozez.

    Insight

The foundational principle of Gozez is the separation of something from its natural growth. This isn't just wool; it's anything that grows on a living body or plant, separated for use.

Therefore, cutting hair, nails, or even picking a flower from the ground – all these are toladot (offshoots) of the melakha of Gozez and are biblically forbidden on Shabbat.

    02

    Melaben: Cleaning and Preparation

After shearing the wool, it must be cleaned. The melakha of 'Melaben' (Bleaching/Washing) is the act of whitening or cleaning. In the Mishkan, this was cleaning raw wool from dirt and grease.

    1. 1Understand the core: Melaben is removing dirt or changing an object's color to prepare it for use.
    2. 2Critical distinction: Scrubbing, wringing, or using cleaning agents are the core of the forbidden melakha.
    3. 3Limited permission: Light soaking in water without scrubbing or wringing, not for thorough cleaning, is permitted.
    משנה שבת ז:ב
    הכובס בבגדים... חייב משום מלבן.

One who washes clothes... is liable for Melaben.

    Insight

Removing a wine stain from a napkin by scrubbing, or wiping a wet table with a cloth and wringing it out – these are toladot of Melaben. We must be mindful of all cleaning actions on Shabbat.

    03

Menapetz, Tzove'a, Toveh: Shaping and Color

After cleaning, the wool is still raw. The melakha of 'Menapetz' (Combing/Carding) is separating the raw wool fibers and aligning them in a uniform direction, so they are suitable for spinning.

    משנה שבת ז:ב
המנפץ את הצמר... חייב משום מנפץ.

One who combs the wool... is liable for Menapetz.

The melakha of 'Tzove'a' (Dyeing) is giving color to the wool. Any change of color for permanence or beauty is included in this melakha. This also includes makeup, as it changes the facial tone for beauty.

    Kushya

Is liquid or powder makeup considered dyeing? Some poskim permit makeup that doesn't adhere well and can be easily removed, arguing it's not 'permanent' enough to be considered dyeing. Others forbid all forms of makeup.

Finally, 'Toveh' (Spinning) is the act of creating threads from the combed and dyed wool. This is the creation of a new structure, transforming raw material into a more finished product.

    04

    Building the Garment: The Beginning

    אב מלאכהAv Melakha
The primary, original labor performed in the Mishkan.
    תולדהToldah
An action similar in essence to an Av Melakha, but different in its specifics. It is biblically forbidden just like an Av Melakha.

We have understood five foundational melakhot in the garment-making process. Each represents a broader principle applicable to a variety of actions in our lives. Understanding the principle allows us to navigate Shabbat safely and with holiness.

    Insight

The wisdom of Shabbat melakhot is not a list of 'forbidden' and 'permitted,' but an understanding of the purpose of creation and development. We build a world, and on Shabbat, we pause and connect to the Creator. Each melakha is a brick in this edifice.

    Practice

Explain: why may you not remove a wine stain with a napkin on Shabbat? Which melakhah does it touch?

    Lesson wrap-up

Garment melakhot feel remote - until you look at the bathroom.
