Chapter 4 · Muktzeh in depth

    Basis for a forbidden item

    Lesson 32 of 55 18 min

A tray holding muktzeh at Shabbat's onset itself becomes a "basis". Understand when the basis becomes forbidden and when a basis for both forbidden and permitted items remains permitted.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Define a basis for a forbidden item
    • 02Understand the role of twilight in fixing a basis
    • 03Know the rule for a basis of both forbidden and permitted
    01

    When a basis forms

Per SA (OC 310:7; 309:4), an item on which muktzeh was deliberately placed, remaining so at twilight, becomes a basis and is forbidden to move all Shabbat - even if the muktzeh falls off.

    בסיס לאיסור ולהיתר
If a more important permitted item is also on the tray - the basis follows the permitted item and may be moved.
    02

    Example: a table with candlesticks

A table with burning candlesticks and also challah and food is a basis for both, so it is not forbidden. That is why challah is placed on the table before Shabbat.

    Raya

Proof that twilight is decisive: what was placed after Shabbat began does not make it a basis.

    Practice

Check before Shabbat: what is on the table next to the candles?

    Lesson wrap-up

One minute of planning before Shabbat saves questions all Shabbat.
