From Avot to Toladot: A Whole World Opens
We've built a strong foundation with the 39 Avot Melakhah. These are the primary categories, the building blocks of Shabbat law. But Shabbat laws don't end there. Halakha extends Shabbat rules to hundreds of additional actions, called 'Toladot'.
The 'Av' is the melakhah that existed in the Mishkan. The 'Toladah' is a different action, not identical to the Mishkan's action, but included in the same halakhic category.
Understanding 'Toladot' is the key to applying Shabbat laws in modern reality. Each Av has its own mechanism for generating Toladot. We will decode these mechanisms.
כל העושה מלאכה בשבת, אם עשאה כדרך העושין אותה בחול, חייב. ואם לאו, פטור.
Anyone who performs a melakhah on Shabbat, if he performs it in the manner it is done on a weekday, is liable. If not, he is exempt.
