Building the Foundation: What is 'Borer'?
The melakhah of Borer is one of the thirty-nine forbidden labors on Shabbat. It involves separating a mixture of two or more types, where we separate the 'desired' from the 'undesired'. This is a fundamental melakhah that appears in our daily lives frequently, and therefore, understanding it is crucial for proper Shabbat observance.
הבורר אוכל מתוך פסולת, חייב. פסולת מתוך אוכל, חייב. אוכל מתוך אוכל, אם הוא מין אחד – פטור. שני מינים – חייב.
One who separates food from waste is liable. Waste from food is liable. Food from food, if it is one type – exempt. Two types – liable.
The Mishna presents us with the basic principle: any act of separating different components in a mixture, where we choose the desired and remove the undesired, is a potential for Borer. The key is 'mixture' and 'separation'.
