Building the Foundation: Writing – Definitions and Limits
The melakha of 'Writing' is one of the 39 Avot Melakhot. It derives from the Tabernacle's work, where they wrote the names of the tribes on the Choshen stones and details of the sacrifices. But what exactly constitutes 'writing' for Shabbat purposes?
הכותב שתי אותיות, חייב. כתב אות אחת ועל גביה כתב אות אחרת, חייב.
One who writes two letters is liable. If one wrote one letter and on top of it wrote another letter, he is liable.
The number 'two' is the cornerstone for understanding the melakha of writing. A single letter is not considered 'writing' in the halakhic sense, as it lacks sufficient independent meaning.
