Building the Foundation: Intention of the Heart
Welcome to a particularly important lesson. Today, we will build our understanding of intention (kavanah) in prayer, specifically in Keriat Shema. This is a foundational stone in our service of Hashem.
The Gemara on page 13b presents a critical distinction between the parts of Keriat Shema. Not all verses require the same level of intention.
אמר רב יהודה אמר שמואל: קרא קריאת שמע ולא כוון לבו בפסוק ראשון – לא יצא. בפסוק ראשון הוא דלא יצא, הא בפסוק שני יצא.
Rav Yehuda said in the name of Shmuel: If one recited Keriat Shema but did not focus his heart on the first verse – he has not fulfilled his obligation. It is specifically concerning the first verse that he has not fulfilled his obligation, but regarding the second verse, he has fulfilled it.
This distinction opens the door to understanding the complex structure of kavanah in prayer. There are different layers of spiritual connection.
