    Chapter 8 · Independent reading

Gemara with Rashi - a guided reading

    Lesson 34 of 37 20 min

We connect all the tools: read a Gemara passage, try independently, then Rashi. We work on the opening of Berakhot - the Tanna's question and the Gemara's response.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Read the first passage of Berakhot 2a
    • 02Understand the question "Tanna heikha ka'i"
    • 03See how Rashi completes the understanding
    01

    The passage

    Berakhot 2a
    תנא היכא קאי דקתני מאימתי

Where does the Tanna stand, that he teaches "from when"?

    Kushya

The question: the mishnah asks "from when" as if the obligation is already known. Where is it from?

    Terutz

The first answer: "he stands on the verse" - the Tanna relies on "when you lie down and when you rise".

    02

    What Rashi adds

Rashi clarifies the words and completes the logic: the Tanna did not open with a time question out of nowhere - the obligation is already known from the verse, so one can ask "from when". The independent reading is confirmed and completed.

    1. 1Read the passage twice.
    2. 2Phrase the question in your own words.
    3. 3Read Rashi on "heikha ka'i".
    4. 4Compare: what you understood alone and what was added.
    Practice

In the site reader, open Berakhot 2a, read up to "ve-iba'it eima" and summarise in three lines.

    Lesson wrap-up

Gemara, attempt, Rashi - three steps that build an independent learner.
