The Mishna: Foundation of the Discussion
Our journey always begins with the Mishna. It is the cornerstone of every sugya. We will read it carefully and understand the halakha it presents.
From when do we recite Shema in the evenings? From the time the kohanim enter to eat their terumah. Until the end of the first watch, these are the words of Rabbi Eliezer. And the Sages say: until midnight. Rabbi Gamliel says: until dawn breaks.
- 1Identify the central question of the Mishna.
- 2Detail the different opinions presented in the Mishna.
- 3Summarize the halakhic dispute concisely.
The Mishna presents three opinions regarding the time for reciting the evening Shema. This is a classic 'Maimatai' dispute – when does a particular mitzvah begin or end?
