Chapter 3 · Aramaic: the first tools

There is and there is not - ika, leika, la, lav

    Lesson 14 of 37 14 min

Affirmation and negation are the hinges of the discussion. A small word like "lav" flips a sentence. We learn to spot them fast.

    Lesson goals
    • 01Tell ika from leika
    • 02Recognise la, lav and leit
    • 03Read the rhetorical "mi la"
    01

    Words of existence

    אִיכָּא
    there is
    לֵיכָּא
    there is not
    אִית / לֵית
there is / is not (lait leih - he does not hold)
    לָא
    not
    לָאו
not (before a noun, or as a question: "lav davka")
    02

    The inverted question

"Mi la..." is a question with a positive meaning: "is it not...? Surely it is." "Lav mi..." is similar. Recognising the pattern shows the Gemara is proving, not asking.

    Insight

"Leit leih" usually means "he does not hold so", not "he has no object". Context decides.

    Practice

Translate: "leika man de-palig" and "leit leih ha sevara".

    Lesson wrap-up

One word of negation moves the whole wall. Watch for it.
