    Source and decoding

    Bava Metzia 7a

Rav Tahlifa of the West taught before Rabbi Abbahu: If two people grip a garment, each takes the portion within his grasp, and they divide the remainder equally. Rabbi Abbahu gestured to him: And with an oath.

Each holder takes the actually gripped portion; the remainder is shared equally with an oath. The equal-division Mishnah concerns holding fringes. Distinguishing gripped fabric from the remainder reconciles the texts.
