    Source and decoding

    Bava Metzia 2a

One says, “It is all mine,” and the other says, “Half is mine.” The first swears that his share is no less than three quarters; the second swears that his share is no less than one quarter. The first takes three quarters and the second one quarter.

When one holder claims half, the other half is conceded. Only the contested half is divided, producing three quarters and one quarter with oaths. Distinguish the claim from the dispute.

The wording of the oaths in the Mishnah proves this, as each swears only concerning his claim in the disputed half.
