    Begin with the opening verses, notice repetitions and transitions, then use the verse index to return to the exact line. The verse index is especially useful for following repeated words and changes in scene or voice.

    Reading lens

    Read the passage once for its sequence of ideas, then return to the words that carry the argument or image. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

    A unit-by-unit map of all 27 verses on this page: opening words, the moves the text actually makes and a link back to that exact verse.

    Malbim's commentary

    1. Verse 1

      Eliphaz explains to Job that he had not received this prophetic revelation directly because he was unworthy of such a privilege.

    2. Verse 2

      He had not only questioned the existence of Providence but had also wrongly asserted that a person's fate is determined by the stars not by his behavior

    3. Verse 3

      This is the cue for Eliphaz to present his reasoned as distinct from his prophetic reply to Job's hypothesis. He argues that the prosperity of the wicked is a matter of chance and transient, whereas the hard-earned rewards of the righteous are lasting.

    4. Verse 5

      Moreover, the latter will ultimately inherit the wealth of the formerTherefore no conclusions about the injustice or otherwise of Providence can be drawn from the prosperity of the wicked.

    5. Verse 7

      The comets are neither messengers of the stars nor portents of doomGod alone governs and man has control over his own actions.

    6. Verse 9

      Eliphaz brings two examples of God's active involvement in the world:

    7. Verse 10

      The general beneficial wonders of Nature, as illustrated by rainfall and the river-irrigation of desert lands such as Egypt, and the particular supernatural interventions which prevent the extinction of the weak and destitute despite the predatory nature of their surroundings. These are an indication of Divine design, for anything that is so wisely apportioned cannot be the result of chance

    8. Verse 12

      As an example of this, Malbim cites the way the Lord frustrated the scheme to kill David presented by Ahitophel to Absalom ( vide 2Samuel 17:14 ).

    9. Verse 13

      The example Malbim cites for this is the selling of Joseph by his brothers. God allowed it to happen as it fitted in with His plans. Indeed, it would lead to the very thing they were trying to prevent, namely, Joseph's pre-eminence over them.

    10. Verse 17

      Events are determined by a combination of man's actions and God's interventionsEliphaz explains that the same is true of suffering. Some suffering is a natural consequence of man's misbehavior and overindulgence, and some is Providential, intended for atonement, the purging of sin or to induce repentance. However, though the former cause is totally bad, the latter should be seen as a Divine gift intended for man's ultimate good. Today's misfortune may turn out to have been a life-saver tomorrow.

    11. Verse 20

      By being driven from home by famine or war, you may be saved from some other more dangerous life-threatening event.

    12. Verse 22

      To illustrate the general idea underlying these verses, Malbim refers to the following passage from the Talmud (Niddah 31a): Like two men who set out on a trading expedition and one of them began to blaspheme and malign when a thorn stuck in him [and he had to cancel his journey]. Subsequently, however, when he heard that his friend's ship had sunk in the sea he began to glorify and give praise [to God]…Even a person for whom a miracle is performed is unaware of the miracle..

    13. Verse 27

      Eliphaz concludes by requesting that Job take note of this reasoned reply.

    Original text

    קְֽרָא־נָ֭א הֲיֵ֣שׁ עוֹנֶ֑ךָּ וְאֶל־מִ֖י מִקְּדֹשִׁ֣ים תִּפְנֶֽה׃

    Call now! Will anyone answer you? To whom among the holy beings will you turn?

    כִּֽי־לֶ֭אֱוִיל יַהֲרׇג־כָּ֑עַשׂ וּ֝פֹתֶ֗ה תָּמִ֥ית קִנְאָֽה׃

    Vexation kills the fool; Passion slays the simpleton.

    אֲֽנִי־רָ֭אִיתִי אֱוִ֣יל מַשְׁרִ֑ישׁ וָאֶקּ֖וֹב נָוֵ֣הוּ פִתְאֹֽם׃

    I myself saw a fool who had struck roots; Impulsively, I cursed his home:

    יִרְחֲק֣וּ בָנָ֣יו מִיֶּ֑שַׁע וְיִֽדַּכְּא֥וּ בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר וְאֵ֣ין מַצִּֽיל׃

    May his children be far from success; May they be oppressed in the gate with none to deliver them;

    אֲשֶׁ֤ר קְצִיר֨וֹ׀ רָ֘עֵ֤ב יֹאכֵ֗ל וְאֶֽל־מִצִּנִּ֥ים יִקָּחֵ֑הוּ וְשָׁאַ֖ף צַמִּ֣ים חֵילָֽם׃

    May the hungry devour his harvest, Carrying it off in baskets; May the thirsty swallow their wealth.

    כִּ֤י׀ לֹא־יֵצֵ֣א מֵעָפָ֣ר אָ֑וֶן וּ֝מֵאֲדָמָ֗ה לֹא־יִצְמַ֥ח עָמָֽל׃

    Evil does not grow out of the soil, Nor does mischief spring from the ground;

    כִּֽי־אָ֭דָם לְעָמָ֣ל יוּלָּ֑ד וּבְנֵי־רֶ֝֗שֶׁף יַגְבִּ֥יהוּ עֽוּף׃

    For people are born to [do] mischief, Just as sparks fly upward.

    אוּלָ֗ם אֲ֭נִי אֶדְרֹ֣שׁ אֶל־אֵ֑ל וְאֶל־אֱ֝לֹהִ֗ים אָשִׂ֥ים דִּבְרָתִֽי׃

    But I would resort to God; I would lay my case before God,

    עֹשֶׂ֣ה גְ֭דֹלוֹת וְאֵ֣ין חֵ֑קֶר נִ֝פְלָא֗וֹת עַד־אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר׃

    Who performs great deeds that cannot be fathomed, Wondrous things without number;

    הַנֹּתֵ֣ן מָ֭טָר עַל־פְּנֵי־אָ֑רֶץ וְשֹׁ֥לֵֽחַ מַ֝֗יִם עַל־פְּנֵ֥י חוּצֽוֹת׃

    Who gives rain to the earth, And sends water over the fields;

    לָשׂ֣וּם שְׁפָלִ֣ים לְמָר֑וֹם וְ֝קֹדְרִ֗ים שָׂ֣גְבוּ יֶֽשַׁע׃

    Who raises the lowly up high, So that the dejected are secure in victory;

    מֵ֭פֵר מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת עֲרוּמִ֑ים וְֽלֹא־תַעֲשֶׂ֥נָה יְ֝דֵיהֶ֗ם תֻּֽשִׁיָּֽה׃

    Who thwarts the designs of the crafty, So that their hands cannot gain success;

    לֹכֵ֣ד חֲכָמִ֣ים בְּעׇרְמָ֑ם וַעֲצַ֖ת נִפְתָּלִ֣ים נִמְהָֽרָה׃

    Who traps the clever in their own wiles; The plans of the crafty go awry.

    יוֹמָ֥ם יְפַגְּשׁוּ־חֹ֑שֶׁךְ וְ֝כַלַּ֗יְלָה יְֽמַשְׁשׁ֥וּ בַֽצׇּהֳרָֽיִם׃

    By day they encounter darkness, At noon they grope as in the night.

    וַיֹּ֣שַׁע מֵ֭חֶרֶב מִפִּיהֶ֑ם וּמִיַּ֖ד חָזָ֣ק אֶבְיֽוֹן׃

    But [God] saves the needy from the sword of their mouth, From the clutches of the strong.

    וַתְּהִ֣י לַדַּ֣ל תִּקְוָ֑ה וְ֝עֹלָ֗תָה קָ֣פְצָה פִּֽיהָ׃

    So there is hope for the wretched; The mouth of wrongdoing is stopped.

    הִנֵּ֤ה אַשְׁרֵ֣י אֱ֭נוֹשׁ יוֹכִחֶ֣נּוּ אֱל֑וֹהַּ וּמוּסַ֥ר שַׁ֝דַּ֗י אַל־תִּמְאָֽס׃

    See how happy is the person whom God reproves; Do not reject the discipline of the Almighty.

    כִּ֤י ה֣וּא יַכְאִ֣יב וְיֶחְבָּ֑שׁ יִ֝מְחַ֗ץ וְיָדָ֥ו תִּרְפֶּֽינָה׃

    [God] injures, but also binds up; God’s hands wound, but also heal.

    בְּשֵׁ֣שׁ צָ֭רוֹת יַצִּילֶ֑ךָּ וּבְשֶׁ֓בַע׀ לֹֽא־יִגַּ֖ע בְּךָ֣ רָֽע׃

    You will be delivered from six troubles; In seven no harm will reach you:

    בְּֽ֭רָעָב פָּדְךָ֣ מִמָּ֑וֶת וּ֝בְמִלְחָמָ֗ה מִ֣ידֵי חָֽרֶב׃

    In famine you will be redeemed from death, In war, from the sword.

    בְּשׁ֣וֹט לָ֭שׁוֹן תֵּחָבֵ֑א וְֽלֹא־תִירָ֥א מִ֝שֹּׁ֗ד כִּ֣י יָבֽוֹא׃

    You will be sheltered from the scourging tongue; You will have no fear when violence comes.

    לְשֹׁ֣ד וּלְכָפָ֣ן תִּשְׂחָ֑ק וּֽמֵחַיַּ֥ת הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ אַל־תִּירָֽא׃

    You will laugh at violence and starvation, And have no fear of wild beasts.

    כִּ֤י עִם־אַבְנֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֣ה בְרִיתֶ֑ךָ וְחַיַּ֥ת הַ֝שָּׂדֶ֗ה הׇשְׁלְמָה־לָּֽךְ׃

    For you will have a pact with the rocks in the field, And the beasts of the field will be your allies.

    וְֽ֭יָדַעְתָּ כִּֽי־שָׁל֣וֹם אׇהֳלֶ֑ךָ וּֽפָקַדְתָּ֥ נָ֝וְךָ֗ וְלֹ֣א תֶחֱטָֽא׃

    You will know that all is well in your tent; When you visit your wife you will never fail.

    וְֽ֭יָדַעְתָּ כִּֽי־רַ֣ב זַרְעֶ֑ךָ וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֶ֗יךָ כְּעֵ֣שֶׂב הָאָֽרֶץ׃

    You will see that your offspring are many, Your descendants like the grass of the earth.

    תָּב֣וֹא בְכֶ֣לַח אֱלֵי־קָ֑בֶר כַּעֲל֖וֹת גָּדִ֣ישׁ בְּעִתּֽוֹ׃

    You will come to the grave in ripe old age, As shocks of grain are taken away in their season.

    הִנֵּה־זֹ֖את חֲקַרְנ֥וּהָ כֶּֽן־הִ֑יא שְׁ֝מָעֶ֗נָּה וְאַתָּ֥ה דַֽע־לָֽךְ׃ {פ}

    See, we have inquired into this and it is so; Hear it and accept it.
