    Text map

Begin with the opening verses, notice repetitions and transitions, then use the verse index to return to the exact line. The verse index is especially useful for following repeated words and changes in scene or voice.

    Reading lens

Read the passage once for its sequence of ideas, then return to the words that carry the argument or image. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

A unit-by-unit map of all 33 verses on this page: opening words, the moves the text actually makes and a link back to that exact verse.

    Malbim's commentary

    1. Verse 1

      Elihu now addresses Job directly.

    2. Verse 4

At the end of the first round of speeches (Ch.13:20-22) Job had pleaded that he be given the chance to argue his case with God on equal terms. Elihu now presents himself as the answer to this cry: he will stand-in for God and answer Job’s case. He can do so because he reasons on the basis of the Divine Forms in his soul and not empirical evidence. Consequently, when he speaks, he will be expressing God’s ideas. At the same time, since he is mortal, Job will have no reason to fear him or be in awe of him as he would be in the presence of God, whom 'no man can see and live' (Exodus 33.19).

and the divine breath of the Almighty sustains me.

    3. Verse 8

As is the custom of lawyers, Elihu opens his own argument by summarizing Job’s case against God.

    4. Verse 9

Basing himself on Job’s own words in The Seventh Oration (Ch.13.20-28), he reiterates that Job claims —

      1. to be innocent of any sin and that —

      2. even had he done something wrong, he should not be held responsible, as he has no freedom of choice, everything being predestined by the Cosmos to whom God has transferred governance.

    5. Verse 12

Implicit in Job’s argument is the idea that God is hostile or at best indifferent to man; that He makes impossible demands of him, punishing him for acts over which he has no choice and denying him guidance or acknowledgment. Elihu rejects this, saying that God repeatedly calls upon man to repent, initially through his conscience by such means as a dream, and if this fails, by means of the warnings implicit in visitations of sickness and pain.

    6. Verse 16

Malbim gives the following explanation of how these dreams workIt is the moral force implanted in man's soul that gives him his sense of right and wrong. And it is by virtue of this force that he is roused to be moved by the dream and to examine his deeds. For the moral sensibility embedded in his [divine] soul prophesies to him, through the impact of the dream, that he has exceeded the bounds of morality. Thus it appears as though the dream inscribes these things on his soul. And in order that he believe that the message was from God, the moral force in his soul puts its signature to it, authorizing and confirming the truth of the message, so that he should feel, by the nature of his soul, that he has sinned and been warned from above. The moral force in his soul first makes man take note of the dream and then confirms its truth. The overall result is that his conscience has been pricked.

    7. Verse 17

All good and evil traits are embedded in the human soul, deep in its recesses, from where the רוח–spirit raises their semblance up to the mind, stimulating the person to do and act according to the particular trait or disposition. And if evil images such as pride, anger, revenge, cruelty etc., rise from the recesses of the soul and the person is drawn to behave according to these evil traits, the dream alerts him to abandon them and to plunge them back into the deepest recesses of his soul. There they remain concealed from him, lest they rise again into his mind. Thus, are man's darkest passions hidden from him...and remain just a disposition (תכונה) and not a trait (מדה) to be acted upon'

    8. Verse 23

Elihu details three ways by which a man can be saved from this state.

The first is by virtue of his good deeds.

    9. Verse 26

The second way is by prayer.

    10. Verse 27

And the third is if he apologies and makes restitution to those he has offended or hurt.

    11. Verse 29

God makes repeated attempts to save the person.

    12. Verse 31

Elihu now urges Job either to reply, if he has anything to say, or if not, to continue listening attentively.

    Original text

But now, Job, listen to my words, Give ear to all that I say.

Now I open my lips; My tongue forms words in my mouth.

My words bespeak the uprightness of my heart; My lips utter insight honestly.

The spirit of God formed me; The breath of Shaddai sustains me.

If you can, answer me; Argue against me, take your stand.

You and I are the same before God; I too was nipped from clay.

You are not overwhelmed by fear of me; My pressure does not weigh heavily on you.

Indeed, you have stated in my hearing, I heard the words spoken,

“I am guiltless, free from transgression; I am innocent, without iniquity.

But [God] finds reasons to oppose me, And considers me an enemy.

My feet are placed in stocks, And all my ways are watched.”

In this you are not right; I will answer you: God is greater than any mortal.

Why do you level the complaint That there is no reply to anyone’s charges?

For God speaks time and again— Though no one perceives it—

In a dream, a night vision, When deep sleep falls on everyone, While they slumber on their beds.

Then everyone’s understanding is opened, And God’s signature is left by disciplining them—

To turn a mortal away from an action, To suppress pride in a man.

[God] spares him from the Pit, His person, from perishing by the sword.

He is reproved by pains on his bed, And the trembling in his bones is constant.

He detests food; Fine food [is repulsive] to him.

His flesh wastes away till it cannot be seen, And his bones are rubbed away till they are invisible.

He comes close to the Pit, His life [verges] on death.

If he has a representative, One advocate against a thousand To declare the person upright,

    וַיְחֻנֶּ֗נּוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר פְּ֭דָעֵהוּ מֵרֶ֥דֶת שָׁ֗חַת מָצָ֥אתִי כֹֽפֶר׃

    Then [God] has mercy on him and decrees, “Redeem him from descending to the Pit, For I have obtained his ransom;

    רֻֽטְפַ֣שׁ בְּשָׂר֣וֹ מִנֹּ֑עַר יָ֝שׁ֗וּב לִימֵ֥י עֲלוּמָֽיו׃

Let his flesh be healthier than in his youth; Let him return to his younger days.”

He prays to God, who accepts him; He enters the divine presence with shouts of joy, For [God] requites humans for their righteousness.

The contrite person declares to all, “I have sinned; I have perverted what was right; But I was not paid back for it.”

He is redeemed from passing into the Pit; He, “me…I.” will enjoy the light.

Truly, God does all these things Two or three times to a man,

To bring him back from the Pit, That he may bask in the light of life.

    הַקְשֵׁ֖ב אִיּ֥וֹב שְֽׁמַֽע־לִ֑י הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ וְאָנֹכִ֥י אֲדַבֵּֽר׃

    Pay heed, Job, and hear me; Be still, and I will speak;

    אִם־יֵשׁ־מִלִּ֥ין הֲשִׁיבֵ֑נִי דַּ֝בֵּ֗ר כִּֽי־חָפַ֥צְתִּי צַדְּקֶֽךָּ׃

If you have what to say, answer me; Speak, for I am eager to vindicate you.

    אִם־אַ֭יִן אַתָּ֥ה שְֽׁמַֽע־לִ֑י הַ֝חֲרֵ֗שׁ וַאֲאַלֶּפְךָ֥ חׇכְמָֽה׃ {פ}

But if not, you listen to me; Be still, and I will teach you wisdom.
