Verse 1
And Hiram the king of Tyre sent It is explained in Genesis Rabbah (85:4): “This man was accustomed to being friendly to the tribe of Judah; so was Hirah the Adullamite to Judah.
and masons and carpenters craftsmen.
Verse 2
And David knew that the Lord had established him as king when he saw that the kings of the nations sent him gifts.
Verse 3
and David took All this was David’s strength.
Verse 8
And the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, and all the Philistines went up because the Philistines had been ruling all the time until Saul and David came, as it is written (Jud. 15:11) concerning Samson: “Did you not know that the Philistines rule over us?” And likewise, (I Samuel 4:9): “Strengthen yourselves and become men, you Philistines, lest you serve the Hebrews, as they served you, etc.” Likewise, above in this portion (10:7): “And all the men of Israel saw, etc. and they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and settled in them.” And in those seven years that David reigned in Hebron alone they did not say a word, and they were not concerned that David reigned over Hebron, because they said, “What do we care? Perhaps a governor or an officer appointed David over Hebron.” But when he was anointed king over all Israel, the Philistines all went up to seek David, for they did not want there to be a king in Israel, but that they should continue ruling over them.
Verse 10
And David inquired of God through the Urim and Tummim.
Verse 11
And they went up to Baal-Perazim which was later called Baal-Perazim because of the incident that occurred there. God has broken my enemies in my hand meaning that they fled and were broken off from one another.
like a breach of waters like waves of water that break from their place and fall somewhere else.
Verse 14
circle them The Divine Standard of Justice said to the Omnipresent, “Lord of the universe, why did You dismiss Saul for David?” [God] replied, “Because he did not wait seven days for Samuel as he had commanded him” [as in I Sam. 13:8–14]. The Holy One, blessed be He, said [further], “Now I shall test David: Circle them.” And David observed this.

Verse 1
וישלח — בשמואל (סי' ה) נאמרו מעשים אלה שבפ' זו קודם להעלאת הארון, באשר שם רצה לספר מהבאת הארון בשני הפעמים בספור אחד, אבל עזרא גלה לנו שהעלאת הארון בפעם ראשונה זה היה תחלה ותיכף אחר שכבש את מצודת ציון ויחד לנו עיר דוד לשבתו, וכאשר ישב הארון בבית עובד, בג' חדשים אלה, היו הדברים הנאמרים בפ' זו, שחירם שלח מלאכים לכרות עמו ברית שלום, ועצי ארזים וחרשים לבנות לו בית, וע"כ אמר:
Verse 2
וידע דוד — ר"ל מזה שנתאספו כל ישראל משיחור מצרים עד לבא חמת ע"פ פקודתו, ידע שהכינו ה' למלך על ישראל (כי תחלה לא באו עדיין כולם להמליכו). וממה ששלח חירם אליו מלאכים, ידע כי נשאת למעלה מלכותו, עד שמלכי גוים יאשרוהו:
Verse 3
ויקח — אז התחיל להוסיף לקחת עוד נשים להרבות בנים ובנות, ועמ"ש בשמואל שם, ולמעלה סי' ג':
Verse 8
וישמעו — באשר עד עתה היה בעל בריתם ולוחם מלחמת אכיש, רצו לראות אם יכנע להם, בשגם שהם היו עד עתה מושלים בישראל, עז"א שהלכו לבקש ולדרוש איך יתנהג כנגדם. ובשמואל (ה, יז) כתיב וישמע דוד וירד אל המצודה, ופי' עזרא שר"ל שיצא לפניהם, היינו שרצה להקדים אותם וליפול בארצם לבל יניחם להתפשט בא"י, ולכן הלך אל המצודה היא המצודה שבמדבר מעון, שהיתה קרובה לארץ פלשתים. אבל הם הקדימו א"ע בתוך כך וינטשו בעמק רפאים שהוא סמוך לירושלים:
Verse 10
וישאל האעלה — כי ההולך מן המדבר לצד ירושלים הוא עולה:
Verse 11
ויעלו בבעל פרצים — בשמואל (שם, כ) כתיב ויבא דוד בבעל פרצים, שנוכל לפרש שבבוא דוד בבעל פרצים הלכו פלשתים לקראתו ויתגרו בו מלחמה, ופירש עזרא שהפלשתים עלו בבעל פרצים, שעלו מן העמק אל ההר להתקרב אל ירושלים, ודוד בא שם מאחריהם ויכה אותם
ע"כ קרא — בשמואל אמר ע"כ קראו, פירש עזרא שקראו השם ע"פ דוד שנתן שם זה:
Verse 12
ויעזבו — בשמואל (שם, כא) כתיב את עצביהם, ופירש עזרא שעצבים אלה לא היו אצלם כעין טלמסאות, רק אלהות ממש. ועל מ"ש בשמואל וישאם דוד, שמשמע שנשא אותם לירושלים, פירש עזרא ששרף אותם, אחר שהיו עבודת גלולים, ופי' וישאם מענין משאת עשן, ששרפם, ועמ"ש עוד בשמואל שם:
Verse 14
ויאמר לו האלהים — בשמואל (שם, כג) כתיב לא תעלה הסב אל אחריהם, ופירש עזרא, שר"ל לא תעלה אחריהם כמו בפעם ראשונה שנפל מאחריהם רק הסב אל הצד (ר"ל שמלת הסב בשמואל הוא מאמר מוסגר לא תעלה (רק הסב מעליהם) (לא תעלה) אל אחריהם). ויתר הדברים התבארו בפי' שמואל שם:

Verse 1

וַ֠יִּשְׁלַ֠ח (חירם) [חוּרָ֨ם] מֶלֶךְ־צֹ֥ר מַלְאָכִים֮ אֶל־דָּוִיד֒ וַעֲצֵ֣י אֲרָזִ֔ים וְחָרָשֵׁ֣י קִ֔יר וְחָרָשֵׁ֖י עֵצִ֑ים לִבְנ֥וֹת ל֖וֹ בָּֽיִת׃

King Hiram of Tyre sent envoys to David with cedar logs, stonemasons, and carpenters to build a palace for him.

Verse 2

וַיֵּ֣דַע דָּוִ֔יד כִּֽי־הֱכִינ֧וֹ יְהֹוָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־נִשֵּׂ֤את לְמַ֙עְלָה֙ מַלְכוּת֔וֹ בַּעֲב֖וּר עַמּ֥וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {ס}

Thus David knew that G OD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingship was highly exalted for the sake of Israel—God’s people.

Verse 3

וַיִּקַּ֨ח דָּוִ֥יד ע֛וֹד נָשִׁ֖ים בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם וַיּ֧וֹלֶד דָּוִ֛יד ע֖וֹד בָּנִ֥ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David begot more sons and daughters.

Verse 4

וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ שְׁמ֣וֹת הַיְלוּדִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיוּ־ל֖וֹ בִּירוּשָׁלָ֑͏ִם שַׁמּ֣וּעַ וְשׁוֹבָ֔ב נָתָ֖ן וּשְׁלֹמֹֽה׃

These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon;

Verse 5

וְיִבְחָ֥ר וֶאֱלִישׁ֖וּעַ וְאֶלְפָּֽלֶט׃

Ibhar, Elishua, and Elpelet;

Verse 6

וְנֹ֥גַהּ וְנֶ֖פֶג וְיָפִֽיעַ׃

Nogah, Nepheg, and Japhia;

Verse 7

וֶאֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע וּבְעֶלְיָדָ֖ע וֶאֱלִיפָֽלֶט׃ {פ}

Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

Verse 8

וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים כִּי־נִמְשַׁ֨ח דָּוִ֤יד לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ עַל־כׇּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּעֲל֥וּ כׇל־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים לְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אֶת־דָּוִ֑יד וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע דָּוִ֔יד וַיֵּצֵ֖א לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up in search of David; but David heard of it, and he went out to them.

Verse 9

וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים בָּ֑אוּ וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃

The Philistines came and raided the Valley of Rephaim.

Verse 10

וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל דָּוִ֤יד בֵּאלֹהִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאֶֽעֱלֶה֙ עַל־[פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים] (פלשתיים) וּנְתַתָּ֖ם בְּיָדִ֑י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֤וֹ יְהֹוָה֙ עֲלֵ֔ה וּנְתַתִּ֖ים בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃

David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hands?” And G OD answered him, “Go up, and I will deliver them into your hands.”

Verse 11

וַיַּעֲל֥וּ בְּבַֽעַל־פְּרָצִים֮ וַיַּכֵּ֣ם שָׁ֣ם דָּוִיד֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔יד פָּרַ֨ץ הָאֱלֹהִ֧ים אֶת־אוֹיְבַ֛י בְּיָדִ֖י כְּפֶ֣רֶץ מָ֑יִם עַל־כֵּ֗ן קָ֥רְא֛וּ שֵֽׁם־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא בַּ֥עַל פְּרָצִֽים׃

Thereupon David ascended Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there. David said, “God burst out. against my enemies by my hands as waters burst out.” That is why that place was named Baal-perazim.

Verse 12

וַיַּ֥עַזְבוּ שָׁ֖ם אֶת־אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔יד וַיִּשָּׂרְפ֖וּ בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ {פ}

They abandoned their gods there, and David ordered these to be burned.

Verse 13

וַיֹּסִ֤יפוּ עוֹד֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ בָּעֵֽמֶק׃

Once again the Philistines raided the valley.

Verse 14

וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל ע֤וֹד דָּוִיד֙ בֵּאלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים לֹ֥א תַעֲלֶ֖ה אַחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם הָסֵב֙ מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וּבָ֥אתָ לָהֶ֖ם מִמּ֥וּל הַבְּכָאִֽים׃

David inquired of God once more, and God answered, “Do not go up after them, but circle around them and confront them at the baca trees.

Verse 15

וִ֠יהִ֠י כְּֽשׇׁמְעֲךָ֞ אֶת־ק֤וֹל הַצְּעָדָה֙ בְּרָאשֵׁ֣י הַבְּכָאִ֔ים אָ֖ז תֵּצֵ֣א בַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה כִּֽי־יָצָ֤א הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ לְהַכּ֖וֹת אֶת־מַחֲנֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baca trees, then go out to battle, for God will be going in front of you to attack the Philistine forces.”

Verse 16

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ דָּוִ֔יד כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖הוּ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיַּכּוּ֙ אֶת־מַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים מִגִּבְע֖וֹן וְעַד־גָּֽזְרָה׃

David did as God had commanded him; and they routed the Philistines from Gibeon all the way to Gezer.

Verse 17

וַיֵּצֵ֥א שֵׁם־דָּוִ֖יד בְּכׇל־הָאֲרָצ֑וֹת וַיהֹוָ֛ה נָתַ֥ן אֶת־פַּחְדּ֖וֹ עַל־כׇּל־הַגּוֹיִֽם׃

David became famous throughout the lands, and G OD put the fear of him in all the nations.
