Orach Chayim Siman 543

Orach Chayim Siman 543 is a source-text unit from the Shulchan Arukh with 3 seifim. Its reading map separates the practical rule, its conditions and the points that need comparison with the surrounding text.

    What to track

Read each seif as a separate step. Identify the action, the condition that limits it and any distinction between cases before moving to the next seif.

    Study lens

Read the passage once for its sequence of ideas, then return to the words that carry the argument or image. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

A unit-by-unit map of all 3 seifim on this page: opening words, the moves the text actually makes and a link back to that exact seif.

    Original text

    1. Law of work done by a Gentile on Chol HaMoed, and in it is 3 paragraphs. Anything that is forbidden to do, it is forbidden to ask a Gentile to do.

    2. A gentile that accepts from the eve of Yom Tov to build a Jewish house with a contracted agreement (i.e. agreement where payment is made not based on time but a set amount for a task), it is forbidden to let him do on Chol HaMoed even outside of the Domain (Techum). But if he (the Gentile) was given to him work that is detached before the Festival with a contract to do within the Gentile's house, it is allowed.

It is permitted to hire a gentile as a contractor or even as a day worker to work after the moed provided that one does not measure, weigh or count, as would be done during the week. REMA: If the gentile decides to do the work during chol hamoed - it is permitted since the Jew stipulated that the work should be done after the moed.
