Orach Chayim Siman 510

Orach Chayim Siman 510 is a source-text unit from the Shulchan Arukh with 11 seifim. Its reading map separates the practical rule, its conditions and the points that need comparison with the surrounding text.

    What to track

Read each seif as a separate step. Identify the action, the condition that limits it and any distinction between cases before moving to the next seif.

    Study lens

Look for a turn toward a more precise resolution, Shabbat law and sacred time. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

Various things forbidden on Yom Tov and which of them are permitted with a change. 11 sections: One may rub ears of grain and crush legumes in the normal way on Yom Tov, and winnow a little at a time and eat — even using a basket or bowl, but not a board, sieve, or strainer.

One who sorts legumes on Yom Tov sorts in the normal way — in his lap or in a bowl (if he wishes to eat them that day) (HaMagid ch. 3) — but not on a board, sieve, or strainer. This applies when the edible portion is greater than the waste; but if the waste is greater than the edible portion, one removes the edible portion and leaves the waste. And if it would be more effort to remove the waste from the edible than to remove the edible from the waste, even if the edible is the greater portion, one removes the edible and leaves the waste. Rema: Almonds and pistachios that are cracked and still in their shells — the shell is not considered waste since that is their normal state and they are still mixed together. (Tur)

One may not strain mustard through its strainer, nor sweeten it with a wooden coal; but with a metal one it is permitted.

One may not hang a strainer on Yom Tov to filter sediment through it; but if it was already hanging, one may pour sediment into it to strain. One may use a ruse — hang it to put pomegranates in it, and then put sediment in it. Rema: The other laws of straining on Yom Tov are the same as on Shabbat, as stated in §319. (Beit Yosef)

One may not make cheese on Yom Tov. (And one may not curdle milk on Yom Tov.) (Hagahot Maimoniyot ch. 3, Ran end of ch. 4 of Beitzah, and Beit Yosef in the name of Rokeach) Similarly one may not make butter from milk on Yom Tov. (Rivash §121)

One may not cut vegetables with scissors that are normally used to cut them while still attached to the ground.

One may prepare cardoon and artichokes. Rema: It is permitted to salt many pieces of radish on Yom Tov if one wishes to eat them, even though it is forbidden on Shabbat — though some are stringent. (Maharil)

Even though carrying is permitted on Yom Tov even for non-essential purposes, one should not carry large loads in the same manner as on a weekday — one must make a change. How so? One who brings jugs of wine from place to place should not bring them in a basket or crate holding four or five jugs, but should bring them on his shoulder or in front of him, one or two at a time, which shows clearly that he is bringing them for Yom Tov needs. Rema: This applies specifically when carrying from place to place, but from corner to corner (Beit Yosef in the name of Rashi) or from house to house within the same courtyard (Or Zarua) it is permitted in any manner.

One who carries straw should not sling the basket behind his back but should carry it in his hand.

Similarly, loads that are normally carried on a pole should be carried on one's back; those normally carried on one's back should be carried on one's shoulder; those normally carried on the shoulder should be carried in front in one's hand, or a garment should be spread over them — and any similar change in how the load is carried. If it is impossible — such as when one has invited many guests and needs to hurry and bring things before them — one may do it in the normal way. This applies to carrying on a person, but on an animal one may not bring things at all.

One may not bring wood using a rope, basket, or mat, but may bring it in a cloth or in one's lap.
