Orach Chayim Siman 501 is a source-text unit from the Shulchan Arukh with 7 seifim. Its reading map separates the practical rule, its conditions and the points that need comparison with the surrounding text.
What to track
Read each seif as a separate step. Identify the action, the condition that limits it and any distinction between cases before moving to the next seif.
Study lens
Look for a turn toward a more precise resolution, Shabbat law and sacred time. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

It is prohibited to chop wood from beams which are set aside for construction or from beams that broke on Yom Tov even if it was weak before Yom Tov and was about to break. If it broke before Yom Tov and cannot not be used as fuel for a fire without chopping it one may chop large pieces. One may not use an ax, sickle, or a saw; rather one should use a chopper (A butcher’s knife and some make it with two heads resembling an ax) but one should use the narrow head rather than the wide head. Some prohibit even the use of a chopper since we are not experts to identify what is a chopper and only permit the use of a knife.
Wood that is somewhat large but suitable for kindling without splitting, one should not split it at all, and even breaking it by hand, there are those who forbid.
We do not bring wood from the field, even if it was gathered there from the eve of the holiday. However, one may gather in the field from what is directly before him (and likewise in a courtyard, one takes from before him) [Beit Yosef and Rambam] and kindle there. And one may bring wood from what is gathered in a private domain, even if it was enclosed not for dwelling purposes, provided that it has a doorframe and is within the Shabbat boundary. If it lacks any one of these conditions, the wood is muktzeh.
Reed leaves and vine leaves—even though they are gathered in an enclosure, since the wind scatters them, they are considered as if scattered and are forbidden. But if one placed a heavy vessel upon them before Yom Tov, they are considered prepared.
Wood that fell from a tree on Yom Tov—one may not use it for kindling. (See further above, section 506, paragraph 2.)
Vessels that broke on Yom Tov may not be used for kindling because they are newly designated. (And if one kindled with vessels, it is forbidden to stir the fire after they have been partially ignited, for then they become broken vessel pieces, unless one has added prepared wood to them) [Maggid chapter 2 and Ran, first chapter of Beitzah]. But one may kindle with whole vessels or with vessels that broke while it was still day.
Almonds and nuts that one ate before Yom Tov—one may kindle with their shells on Yom Tov. But if one ate them on Yom Tov, one may not kindle with their shells. Gloss: Also, one should not kindle with the almonds and nuts themselves unless they are still in their shells (Beit Yosef). And torches that remained from the first Yom Tov that went out—it is permitted to relight them even on the second day of Rosh Hashanah or on Yom Tov following Shabbat [Rosh and Mordechai, beginning of Beitzah, and Beit Yosef].
