Orach Chayim Siman 324

Orach Chayim Siman 324 is a source-text unit from the Shulchan Arukh with 15 seifim. Its reading map separates the practical rule, its conditions and the points that need comparison with the surrounding text.

    What to track

Read each seif as a separate step. Identify the action, the condition that limits it and any distinction between cases before moving to the next seif.

    Study lens

Look for rabbinic statements and attributed teachings, a turn toward a more precise resolution, Shabbat law and sacred time. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

Laws of preparing animal food on Shabbat. Contains 15 sections One may not sift straw through a sieve to cause the chaff to fall to the ground, nor place it in an elevated position so the chaff descends. But one may take it in a sieve and place it in the feeding trough — even though the chaff falls on its own, it is permitted since he does not intend this.

One may not measure out barley to place before his animal, but rather estimates by approximation.

One may not knead bran for animals or chickens, but one may put water in it and pass a ladle or stick through it crosswise — since he is not kneading with his hands and is not rotating the ladle or stick, it is permitted. One may shake it from vessel to vessel to mix it, and may mix the bran this way in one vessel and distribute it among many vessels placing it before each animal. One may mix in one vessel even a large quantity. Some forbid placing water on bran on Shabbat and say the ruling about passing a ladle crosswise only applies when the water was already placed on it before Shabbat. (See above Siman 321, section 16, regarding garlic and mustard and how one acts.)

Stalks of grain tied in two or three places — one may untie them so the animal can eat from them. Rema: Some say one may only untie a knot that is not permanent. But it is forbidden to rub them by hand as those who prepare animal food do to make them easier to eat — for making something edible from something inedible is permitted, but going to the trouble of preparing something that is already edible to make it more suitable, we do not do.

Wood chips cut from a tree that some feed to animals while still moist — one may untie and shred them to feed them, since they are not edible without shredding.

One may cut gourds before an animal, provided they were detached from the ground the previous day.

One may cut up a carcass before dogs, even if it died that same day — whether it had been ill or healthy. This applies to a hard carcass that they cannot eat without cutting, but if it was suitable for them without cutting, one may not cut it, since we do not take the trouble to prepare something that is already suitable. (See above Siman 321 regarding whether one may chop it finely for birds.)

One may not cut fodder — meaning vegetable grain that was harvested before the grain ripened — or carob before an animal, whether small or large, since without cutting it is also fit to eat.

One may not overfeed a camel — meaning feeding it by hand so much that its intestines expand like a trough — nor force-feed it by pressing food down its throat to a point from which it cannot regurgitate. But one may coax it to eat. One may not force-feed calves but may coax them. What is coaxing? Placing food where it cannot be regurgitated. Force-feeding is placing food where it can be regurgitated. Rema: The law of chickens and geese is the same as that of calves.

It is permitted to place food in the mouths of chickens.

One may not place water or food before bees, nor before dovecote doves or attic doves, nor before pigs. But one may place food before geese, chickens, domesticated doves, and similarly before a dog whose sustenance is your responsibility.

It is permitted to feed silkworms.

One may stand his animal on attached vegetation and we are not concerned he may detach some. But one may not stand it on set-aside matter since its prohibition is light and we are concerned he may give some to it by hand. This applies specifically to standing it directly on the set-aside matter, but standing in front of it in a way that it can only turn in that direction is permitted.

One may take food from before a donkey and place it before an ox, but not take from before an ox to place before a donkey, since it becomes repulsive from the ox's saliva and is no longer suitable for the donkey. Rema: Some are stringent even regarding other types of animals, not to take from before one and place before another of a different species.

It is forbidden to clean out the feeding trough before a fattened ox — even a trough that is a vessel — by a decree on account of one that is in the ground, lest one come to level out holes. It is likewise forbidden to push the straw before it to the sides.
