Orach Chayim Siman 174 is a source-text unit from the Shulchan Arukh with 8 seifim. Its reading map separates the practical rule, its conditions and the points that need comparison with the surrounding text.
What to track
Read each seif as a separate step. Identify the action, the condition that limits it and any distinction between cases before moving to the next seif.
Study lens
Look for rabbinic statements and attributed teachings, a turn toward a more precise resolution, Shabbat law and sacred time. The source text remains the primary evidence; this note offers a structured way to enter it rather than replacing close reading.

If one has only one cup [of wine], set it aside until following the meal, and bless upon it.
One need not bless following the meal's wine, since the Birkat HaMazon covers it. And it also covers the pre-meal wine consumed, even if one hadn't consumed it amidst the meal. And regarding the matter of pre-meal Havdallah wine, see section 299:8.
If one doesn't have wine, and drinks water or another beverage, one need not bless upon them, since they are considered as having come on account of the meal, since one doesn't eat without drinking. And even wine needs no blessing before it, except that it is significant enough that a blessing was established for it, but water or other beverages are not significant beverages and do not require a blessing. ....
Everyone blesses for oneself upon wine amidst a meal, even if they are dining together. gloss: since they are not able to answer amen. since they are concerned lest it were to enter the trachea before the esophagus. gloss: And there are those who say that if he said to them, "Pay attention, my masters" and they listen and pay attention to the blessing and don't eat, then they will answer amen, one blessing for all of them. And that's how we are accustomed.
