    Rashi

And he sprinkled it backward and there [behind him], too, there were vessels that needed sprinkling.

His sprinkling is invalid since we require intent for purification, as is written: "The pure person shall sprinkle it upon the impure person" [Numbers 19:19] -- that he have intention [to sprinkle] upon him.

Forward to the sides to the sides while having a forward component, and not the sides while having a rearward component. Here too, those who are standing to the sides of the priest forward from him are included in the blessing, since they are considered to be in front of him. But those who are to his rear, even though they are not actually behind him, are considered to be behind him.

"And when he opened it" and when he began [to read]. This is written regarding Ezra.

They stood up [i.e.,] they were silent.

Who did not wash his hands prior to ascending the platform.

To what do you attribute your longevity what merit did you have such that you attained longevity?

A kappendarya to shorten his path [by going] through the synagogue, entering through one opening and exiting opposite it. The term "kappendarya" is explained in Berakhot: "Instead of circumventing the rows, I will enter this one" [Berakhot 62b:18] -- rather than circumventing these rows, I will enter this one and shorten my path. And "darei" means rows of houses.

And when he turns his face away from the congregation, what does he say? - The order of the Priestly Benediction according to Rabbi Shelomo [Rashi on Sotah 39b:4:1]: [The priest] uproots his feet from his place during the [blessing of Temple] Service, and comes before the ark, and prays "May it be Your will,... that this blessing etc." as was stated earlier [Sotah 39a:6]. He prolongs this [prayer] until the congregation says Amen to the [blessing of] Thanksgiving. The prayer leader announces "Priests" if there are two of them; if there is [only] one, the prayer leader does not make the announcement, and [the one priest] turns around of his own accord, in accordance with Abaye, who stated earlier, "when there is one [priest] he does not call" [Sotah 38a:15]. When the statement of the caller finishes, he recites the blessing "who has sanctified us etc." [Sotah 39a:5]. After that, they begin the benediction. When the congregation's final Amen finishes, [the priests] turn around and bend their finger joints if they wish. The prayer leader begins "Grant peace" and the priests pray "Master of the Universe, we have performed that which You decreed upon us etc." [Sotah 39a:6], and prolong it until the prayer leader finishes the blessing. They uproot their feet and go.

In the Sheiltot, Parashat Korach, it states that a priest who worshiped idols may not recite the Priestly Benediction, since he is worse than someone who killed a person, as is stated in the chapter "One may only stand", "a priest who killed a person may not lift his hands" [Berakhot 32b:4]. Rabbeinu Gershom Me'Or Hagolah replies in his responsa that [a priest who has sinned and then repents] recites the Priestly Benediction and reads the first [portion] of the Torah [reading] -- once he has returned in repentance, he returns to his sanctified state -- as is stated in a mishna at the end of Tractate Menachot, "Nevertheless the priests of the private altars did not come up to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem, but they did eat matza among their brethren [II Kings 23:9].The halakhic status of these priests is like that of blemished priests in that they receive a share in the distribution of the meat of the offerings and partake of that meat" [Menachot 109a:14]. Just as blemished [priests] may recite the Priestly Benediction and read the first portion in the Torah reading, so too this [repentant priest]. For if you do not say that, you will be weakening those who [seek to] repent, since they will say "woe due to that embarrassment, woe due to that shame", and will refrain from repenting. As Rabbi Yoḥanan says: Anyone who says that Manasseh has no share in the World-to-Come discourages penitents [Sanhedrin 103a:2]. And as the tanna of the school of Rabbi Yishmael taught: Since he went and became a priest of idol worship, should I throw a stone after the fallen? [Kiddushin 20b:2] etc. (Also see Tosafot Menachot 109a s.v. "may not serve" [Tosafot on Menachot 109a:14:1] and Tosafot Taanit 27a s.v "If so just as" [Tosafot on Taanit 27a:1:1].)

and instead he sprinkled it backward, or if he intended to sprinkle the water backward and instead he sprinkled it forward, even if the water lands on vessels that require purification, his sprinkling is invalid. However, if one intended to sprinkle the water forward and instead he sprinkled it forward to the sides, his sprinkling is valid. It is derived from here that one’s sides are considered as though they were in front of him.

§ Rava bar Rav Huna says: Once a Torah scroll has been opened, it is prohibited to converse, even about a matter of halakha . As it is stated: “And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and when he opened it, all the people stood up” (Nehemiah 8:5), and standing is referring to nothing other than silence, as it is stated: “And shall I wait, because they do not speak, because they stand still, and answer no more?” (Job 32:16). Rabbi Zeira said that Rav Ḥisda said: The prohibition against conversing is derived from here: “And the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law” (Nehemiah 8:3). They were not listening to any other voice.

And Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi says: Any priest who did not first wash his hands may not lift his hands to recite the Priestly Benediction; as it is stated: “Lift up [ se’u ] your hands in sanctity and bless the Lord” (Psalms 134:2), which teaches that before reciting the benediction one must sanctify his hands by washing them.

§ Rabbi Elazar ben Shammua was once asked by his disciples: To what do you attribute your longevity? He said to them: In all my days, I never made a shortcut [ kappendarya ] through a synagogue. Nor did I ever stride over the heads of the sacred people, i.e., I never stepped over people sitting in the study hall in order to reach my place, so as not to appear scornful of them. And I never lifted my hands for the Priestly Benediction without first reciting a blessing.

The Gemara asks: What blessing do the priests recite before the benediction? Rabbi Zeira says that Rav Ḥisda says: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with the sanctity of Aaron and commanded us to bless His people, Israel, with love.

The Gemara continues: When the priest begins walking to the platform to recite the benediction, what does he say? The Gemara answers: May it be Your will, Lord our God, that this blessing with which You have commanded us to bless Your people, Israel, shall not contain any stumbling block or iniquity. And when the benediction has been completed, when he turns his face away from the congregation, what does he say? Rav Ḥisda instructed Rav Ukva and taught him that this is what he would say: Master of the Universe, we have performed that which You decreed upon us. Do unto us
