Rabbi Hanina ben Hakinai
Rabbi Hanina ben Hakinai was one of the Ten Martyrs. He exemplified devotion even in his final moments, refusing sustenance and concluding his life with the sanctity of Kiddush.
That day was the eve of Shabbat. His disciples said to him: "Rabbi, do you wish to taste something before you are killed?" He replied: "Until now I have fasted; I have not eaten or drunk, and now I do not know by which path they are leading me. And you tell me to eat and drink?!"
He began Kiddush for the day, "And the heavens were finished" referring to Genesis 2:1, part of the Shabbat Kiddush. He was not allowed to finish until they killed him – until he reached "and He hallowed" referring to Genesis 2:3, also part of the Kiddush. A Heavenly voice came forth and said: "Fortunate are you, Rabbi Hanina ben Hakinai, for you were holy, and your soul departed in holiness at the word 'and He hallowed.'"
