Source and decoding - Shabbat 2a

    Shabbat 2a

The Mishnah builds four cases for each side: who lifted the object and who set it down.

The Mishnah builds four cases for each side: who lifted the object and who set it down. The principle: liability for carrying requires lifting from one domain and placing in another by the same person. When lifting and placing are split between two people, both are exempt from a sin-offering, though the Sages prohibited it.

    Insight

This lesson is a study framework, not a halachic ruling. Check everything in the sources, and bring practical questions to a rabbi.

    Practice

Read the full Mishnah on ב ע״א (2a) and mark who lifted and who placed in each of its eight scenarios.

    Lesson wrap-up

In these cases identify lifting, transfer between domains, and placement. Lifting and placement by the same person are a condition of liability, not a complete list of its conditions.

Test yourself before marking the lesson complete.
